BLUE HILL – Blue Hill Public Library invites the public to a series of four films on contemporary Russia, once a week for four weeks, beginning Monday, July 22nd at 6:30 PM, with Generation P, directed by Viktor Ginzberg. The series is hosted by Professor of Russian history, Tony Anemone.
While on the surface, Russian life today shares little with that of the Soviet Union, under the surface the structures of power that define the relation of the state to the individual have remained largely the same. This series - a mix of fiction, literary adaptation, and documentary - intends to explore contemporary Russia as represented in contemporary movies by four leading filmmakers. Each session will include a brief introduction, and then a discussion afterward.
Generation P is based on a novel by Viktor Pelevin, and takes a surreal look at the origins of the new business and political culture that grew out of the 1990s in Russia.
Tony Anemone, Professor of Russian Literature and Cinema at The New School in New York City since 2006, previously taught at Colby College and The College of William and Mary. He and his wife Vivian Pyle, a potter, summer in Surry. All films are shown free of charge, and everyone is welcome. For more information, call the library at 374-5515.
