UNE shuts down Plymouth State in 4th for 9-5 win

BIDDEFORD -- Tied at 5-all through the 3rd quarter, the University of New England out-shot Plymouth State University by a 21-2 margin in the 4th and registered the only four goals to come away with a 9-5 men's lacrosse victory on Saturday afternoon (Mar. 5) at the Big Blue Turf.

The Nor'easters (2-1), who never trailed in the match, led 5-3 in the 3rd before the Panthers (0-1) netted a pair in the latter stages to even things up.

A face-off violation penalty to start the final frame put UNE a man-up, and Sam Cloutier buried his second tally of the day to give the hosts a permanent advantage.

Mitch Mullin tacked on two more down the stretch for Big Blue -- both assisted by Remy Watt. David Rubenstein had the other marker in the closing stanza, off a quick end-line restart by Dan Auger.

Auger led the Nor'easters with two goals, two assists, and five ground balls. Tom Luttrell added one of each and a team-high four caused turnovers. Andrew Markham accounted for UNE's other score. Between the pipes, John Dusel and David Pearson split the time as well as eight saves.

For Plymouth State, which led 22-18 in shots entering the 4th, Colin Claflin and Bobby Savoia notched two goals apiece. Adam Haversat scooped up a game-best nine ground balls, and Brandon Lee along with Kyle Stockman combined to take 11-of-16 at the face-off X. In net, Jayson LaRiviere made 10 stops.

UNE will get right back to work on Sunday (2 p.m.) with a home contest against No. 8 Bates College.

The Panthers will visit Lasell College on Wednesday for the second of a seven-game road swing to begin the season.
