UMaine Softball Tallies 18 Total Runs, Splits Doubleheader at Rhode Island

KINGSTON, R.I. -- The University of Maine softball team split a doubleheader at Rhode Island on Wednesday afternoon. Maine took game one of the series, 9-0, before falling in game two, 10-9.

Molly Flowers produced another solid outing in the circle, picking up the shutout victory in game one after throwing 5.0 innings and giving up three hits while fanning three.

Offensively, the Black Bears were able to produce 18 runs on the day to go along with 14 hits.

In game one, Maine received home runs from Alyssa Derrick, Rachel Harvey and Felicia Lennon en
route to a convincing 9-0 victory. Lennon (4) and Harvey (3) drove in seven of Maine's nine runs while Harvey went a perfect 3-for-3 in the game.

Maine's offense wasted no time as it pushed across three runs in the top of the first. Maddie Decker produced the first run, reaching on an error to score Erika Leonard. Lennon's single down the left field line brought around two more runs, giving the Black Bears an early three-run advantage.
The Black Bears tacked on two more runs in the top of the third on Lennon's two-run homer.
Harvey kept the offense rolling in the fourth when her single plated Meghan Royle and Rachel Carlson, extending Maine's lead to 7-0.

Solo home runs by Derrick and Harvey in the top of the seventh cushioned Maine's lead.
Nikki Misner and the Black Bear defense locked things down the rest of the way to secure a 9-0 victory in game one.

In game two, Maine again got out to an early lead but three runs in the bottom of the seventh lifted Rhode Island to a 10-9 win.

Five different Black Bears notched hits in the contest but four errors by Maine proved costly. Derrick, Harvey and Maddie Moore each drove in a pair of runs.

Derrick got Maine on the scoreboard early, reaching on a fielder's choice which allowed Royle to score the game's first run. Maine tacked on two more runs on back-to-back bases loaded walks by Carlson and Moore.

The Rams scored their first runs of the game when Paige Julich's second inning sac-fly scored Taylor Archer.

Maine extended its lead to three in the top of the third when Moore's single down the line in left brought around Harvey to score.

Rhode Island answered with a single run in the bottom of the third on Archer's RBI double to center.
Maine took its largest lead of the game after a three-run top of the fourth. Bouchard began the rally with an RBI double to left before coming around to score on Derrick's RBI single up the middle. The lead climbed to five runs after Laurine German scored on a wild pitch.

The Rams responded, tying the game with five runs in the home half of the fourth. Julich's home run to center began the scoring in the inning. Kylie Shivery was able to reach on a costly Maine error which brought in two more runs. Two more Rhode Island runs came in to score shortly after on another Maine throwing error.

Maine was able to regroup, plating two more runs to regain its lead in the top of the sixth. Lennon drove in her fifth run of the day, scoring Harvey on an RBI double before coming around to score on Carlson's groundout to the pitcher.

The Black Bears carried their lead into the bottom of the seventh. However, Rhode Island would rally for three in the final inning. Julich drove in her third run of the game to bring the Rams within a run before Olivia Hendricks' RBI single tied the game. The Rams walked off on Ali Summers RBI single to left.

Maine opens America East play on Saturday with a doubleheader at Stony Brook beginning at 1 p.m.
