Polar Bears Sack Monks, 21-4

BRUNSWICK, Maine – Nationally ranked Bowdoin College (4-4) defeated Saint Joseph's College (6-2), 21-4, in non-conference women's lacrosse action on Wednesday evening.

THE LEAD
The Polar Bears, ranked 20th in the latest NCAA DIII Women's Lacrosse Poll, opened play with nine unanswered goals as the Monks, who entered tonight's contest riding a six-game winning streak, did not find the scoring ledger until sophomore Elyse Caiazzo (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) netted an unassisted marker with 14 minutes left in the first half.

The Monks seemed to claim a little momentum after the Caiazzo strike as the Royal Blue held the
hosts off the board for over 13 minutes while junior Jackie Wilson (Tiverton, R.I.) made it a 9-2 game at the 5:10 mark, but the Polar Bears squelched any thoughts of a comeback bid by netting a pair of goals in the final 23 seconds leading up to intermission.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S

• Wilson scored twice in the loss
• Senior Kat Gadbois (Scarborough, Maine) tallied a goal and an assist with four ground balls and two draw controls
• Caiazzo added four draw controls and her goal was the 100th of her career, as she joins Cassie Diplock '14 (210), Alyssa Marchant '11 (203), Lauren Hagerman '10 (130) and Gadbois (108) as one of five players in program history to reach the century mark
• Freshman Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) made her debut in net and made two saves in 10:19 between the pipes while junior Meghan Fullarton (Windham, Maine) posted seven stops over the remaining 49:41 minutes

TEAM STATS
Bowdoin held advantages in shots (35-14), draw controls (14-12), turnovers (9-15), and ground balls (21-12) while clearing successfully on nine of 10 opportunities. The Monks cleared on four of eight chances in the loss.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING
Prior to tonight, Bowdoin and Saint Joseph's had never faced off in a women's lacrosse contest. The Polar Bears have advanced to the NCAA Tournament in three of the last five years and finished as the NCAA DIII Runner-up with four victories in the 2011 tourney.
