Southern Maine Sweeps Bates 13-5 (6 inn) and 9-1 (5 inn)

GORHAM, Maine – Sophomore Courtney Davis (Woburn, Mass.) was 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored over two games as the University of Southern Maine Huskies swept the Bates College Bobcats 13-5 (6 innings) and 9-1 (5 innings) in a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at the USM Softball Stadium.

Extending its win streak to three games, Southern Maine is 11-3 and 2-0 at home.  Bates College is still in search of its first win of the season and falls to 0-12 with the pair of losses.  USM now holds a 33-18 lead in the 51 meetings between the two schools.

GAME ONE: USM 13, Bates 5 (6 innings)
The Huskies pounded out 12 hits and exploded for six runs in the bottom of the fifth to break open a close game to set up the victory in the opener.  Senior Jen Lynch drove in three runs with a pinch-hit three-run double as part of the Huskies' six-run outburst in the fifth. Davis was 2-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored as part of USM's 12-hit attack and senior Kat McKay (Mechanic Falls, Maine/St. Dominic Academy) cracked her first career home run driving in two runs. McKay's home run was a bomb over the left field fence that was halted only by the Huskies' scoreboard.

USM freshman Sammi Goode (Bucksport, Maine) earned her the win in the circle, pitching
3.1 innings and allowing five earned runs on eight hits and five walks.  Sophomore Katelyn Tucker (Gray, Maine/Windham) earned the save pitching the final 2.2 innings allowing just one hit and striking out two.

The Huskies jumped out to a 6-0 lead after two innings, but Bates rallied for three runs in the top of the third and two more in the top of the fourth to make it a one-run game.  Sophomore Paige Ahlholm (North Andover, Mass.) had a two-run double to center field in the third for the Bobcats, while classmate Emma Schiller (Natick, Mass.) and senior Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) each had RBI doubles in the top of the fourth to spark the Bates' comeback.

Tucker replaced Goode in the top of the fourth after Goode yielded the doubles to Schiller and Lockhardt and then loaded the bases on a pair of walks.  With just one out and the Bobcats threatening to overtake the lead, Tucker was helped by a outstanding defensive play from senior Mary Caron (Lewiston, Maine/St. Dominic's Academy).  Caron was able to turn a double play snagging a line-out from Ahlholm and picking off the Bates' runner at first to end the threat.

The score remained 6-5 in favor of USM through the top of the fifth, before USM broke open the game with six runs on four hits and two walks.  USM scored all six of its runs in the inning with two outs. Lynch started the rally with a three-run double to center field, which was followed by an RBI double to left field from senior Morgan Scavetta (Damariscotta, Maine/Lincoln Academy).  McKay capped the Huskies' rally with her homerun to put her team head 12-5.

Tucker pitched 1-2-3 top of the sixth and the Huskies' ended the game in the bottom of the sixth on a pinch-hit RBI single to center field from Ally Pillar. Bates freshman Kylie Martin (Poland, Maine) took the loss, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing 13 earned runs on 12 hits and 10 walks.

GAME TWO: Southern Maine 9, Bates 1 (5 innings)
Sophomore Taylor Lux (Arundel, Maine/Thornton Academy) went 4-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles as the Huskies again struck for double-digit hits, connecting on 11 en route to a 9-1 five-inning win over the Bobcats.

Sophomore Amber Kelly (Berwick, Maine/Noble) picked up her seventh win of the season and improve to 7-1 overall, limiting the Bobcats to just three hits and a walk.  She did not give up an earned run and struck out five.  Bates freshman Mimi Crowley (Barnstable, Mass./Sturgis Charter School West) allowed eight earned runs on 11 hits and four walks in the loss.

USM again struck early scoring two runs each in the bottom of the first and second.  Davis had an RBI single in the first while junior Samantha Crosman (South Berwick, Maine/Marshwood) had an RBI ground out.  In the second Caron drove in one of the Huskies' two runs on an RBI single to right field.

Down 4-0, Bates took one run back in the top of the third on an RBI ground out from freshman Madison Fox (Denver, Colo./J.K. Mullen) to make it 4-1, but the Huskies' countered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning.  USM took advantage of four hits and several wild pitches in the inning, while Davis knocked in her second run of the game with an RBI single to left field.  USM was able to invoke the eight-run rule scoring two more runs in the bottom of the fourth on RBI doubles from Lynch and Lux to make it 9-1.  Kelly continued her dominance in the top of the fourth sitting the Bobcats down in order to end the game.
