Eagles Split with Beavers for the First Time in Four Years, 5-0, 3-6

BANGOR, Maine – Husson University baseball team split a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) doubleheader with the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) for the first time in four years on Wednesday at the Harold Alfond Diamond at Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex. The Eagles won the first game 5-0 before dropping the nightcap to the Beavers 6-3.

Husson (6-6, 1-1 NAC) with the split ends a four game winning streak while UMaine-Farmington ends a seventeen game losing streak to the Eagles.

Game 1: Husson 5, UMF 0  
The Eagles got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the third when JT Whitten tripled down the
right field line plating Mike Wong and Andrew Curran for the first two runs of the game.

Husson added runs in the fifth on a RBI single by Julien Boone and two in the 6th on a RBI single by Christian Corneil and a sacrifice fly by Andrew Curran making the game 5-0.

For the Eagles, Zach Sugar went a perfect 3-for-3 with a run scored while Curran, Wong, Whitten, Boone and Corneil accounted for the Eagles other five hits in the victory. Tommy Burns (1-0) allowed six hits over seven scoreless while walking one and fanning two to pick up his first win on the season.

For the Beavers, Tom Grady went 1-for-2 with a walk while Sean Cabaniss, Dustin McCrossin, Jimmy Neal, Jordan Croteau and Jimmy Parks each had a hit in the setback. Nate Pusard (1-1) took the lost after allowing five runs (four earned) off eight hits with a walk and four punch outs in 6.0 innings of work.

Game 2: UMF 6, Husson 3
Alex Chapman single drove in Ryan Rebar with one out in the second while Sugar's sacrifice fly to left field in the fifth gave the Eagles the 2-0 lead.

Trailing 2-0 in the top of the sixth, the Beavers got on the board with six runs off seven hits, a wild pitch and a passed ball to take the lead. McCrossin lead off the inning with double through the left side, advanced to third on a single by Ben Keene before scoring UMF's first run of the game on a passed ball. The Beavers scored five more times in the inning on five two-out base hits by Neal, Croteau, Mike Leahy, Parks, and Cabaniss and a wild pitch for the 6-2.

The Eagles added a run in the seventh off a sacrifice fly by Rebar making the game 6-3.

For the Eagles, Boone went 3-for-4 as Whitten was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Rebar had two hits and a RBI in the setback. Curran and Chapman accounted for the other two hits for the Eagles. Dan Whitney (2-1) picked up the lost after yielding six runs (four earned) on eight hits while fanning one in 5.2 innings. Steven Hanscom pitched 1.1 innings of relief allowing just two hits.

For the Beavers, Keene and Grayson Beressi each went 2-for-4 while Keene had a run scored.

McCrossin and Neal added doubles as Cabaniss, Croteau, Leahy and Parks accounted for the other four hits for UMF in the victory. Riley Chickering (2-1) allowed three earned runs off nine hits with five walks and a punch-out over 6.0 innings to pick up his second win on the season.

The Eagles are right back in action today when they host long-time in-state rival Saint Joseph's (Maine) for a single nine inning non conference game at the Harold Alfond Diamond at Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. UMaine-Farmington travels to Colby on Thursday (today) for a nine inning showdown.
