Endicott improves to 9-5 overall, while Thomas falls to 4-11. The Terriers return to the diamond on Wednesday, April 6, when they host the University of New England. First pitch for game one of the non-conference doubleheader is scheduled for 3 p.m.
Game 1: Endicott 5, Thomas 2
Junior Sonja Morse (South China, Maine / Cony) survived a rough first inning in the circle
unscathed. She walked the first three batters of the inning but got out of the jam after one of the walked batters was caught attempting to steal second and two other batters popped out to freshman second baseman Cassie Contigiani (Belmont, N.H. / Belmont).
Morse settled down in the second, sending the Gulls down in order on strikes.
The Terriers grabbed the lead with two runs in the second inning as junior Madison Bentz (Ottawa, Ill. / Ottawa Township) and freshman Lexi Colpack (Franklin, N.H. / Franklin) scored on a Sydney LeBourveau (fr., Jericho, Vt. / Mount Mansfield Union) single to left. Bentz and Colpack led off the inning with back-to-back singles to right field and moved into scoring position following a sacrifice bunt by Morse.
Control issues returned in the third for Morse, who walked the first and third batters of the frame. A wild pitch and a strikeout moved the runners to second and third with two outs before Margaret Martzolf tied the game with a two-run single to right field.
Endicott took the lead in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on three hits, including a two-run bunt single by Casie Beauchemin that made it 5-2.
The Terriers went down in succession in the fourth and had one runner reach in both the fifth and sixth innings but could not cut into the Gulls' advantage.
After Morse struck out the side in the seventh, Thomas had its final chance at the plate. Colpack reached on a two-out double to right center field but was stranded as Morse popped out to short.
The Terriers out hit the Gulls, 6-5, with Colpack finishing 2-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and a stolen base. Morse, LeBourveau and Bentz all added singles.
Morse (4-3) took the loss, allowing five runs on five hits and six walks while striking out nine in a complete-game effort.
No Endicott player ended up with multiple hits, but Julia McNeill had a double and Chrissy Gikas drew a pair of walks. Martzolf and Beauchemin each drove in a pair and Gina DeMilt also had an RBI.
Courtney Blake scored the complete-game win for the Gulls, allowing two runs on six hits and a walk while striking out five.
Game 2: Endicott 5, Thomas 4
Lexi Colpack picked up where she left off at the plate, opening the second game with a single to right field. She moved to third on a Sydney LeBourveau one-out single to right center, but the pair were left stranded when Korrie Laren (jr., Blackstone, Mass. / Blackstone-Millville) and freshman Michaella Arsenault (Portland, Maine / Portland) popped out to end the inning.
Endicott plated a pair in the bottom of the first inning as Margaret Martzolf drilled a two-run double to center field.
Thomas cut the advantage in half in the second inning as freshman Katie Taylor (Lebanon, Maine / Noble) scored on an RBI single by Madison Bentz. A LeBourveau home run to center field an inning later tied the game at 2-2.
The Gulls had a pair of runners reach in both the second and third innings, but could not plate a run. A go-ahead tally finally came with two outs in the fourth as Julie McNeill doubled in KK Palmerino. The Terriers got out of the inning without any further damage being done when Hoffman grounded out to Colpack for the third out.
Endicott added to the lead with a run in the fifth inning as Haley Arduini raced home on a single to left by Jamie Corda. Another run plated in the sixth as Gina DeMilt scored on a two-out single by Emily Hoffman to right.
The Terriers got the tying run on base in the seventh inning. After pinch-hitter Ashlee Quirrion (sr., Jay, Maine / Spruce Mountain) drew a two-out walk and moved to second on a Colpack single to center, Sonja Morse drew a walk to load the bases and end the day of Gulls starting pitcher Mikaela Mallozzi.
Endicott reliever Laura Somerville issued a walk to LeBourveau to plate Madison Bentz, who re-entered the game to run for Quirrion, while Colpack scored on a Laren single to left field to cut the lead to 5-4. The Terriers could not complete the comeback, however, as Somerville struck out Jordanna Agger (South Portland, Maine / Wells) for the final out of the game.
Colpack finished 3-for-4 with a run scored, while LeBourveau was 2-for-3 with a solo home run and two RBI. Laren and Bentz each picked up a hit and an RBI.
Senior Faith Robinson (Auburn, N.H. / Pinkerton Academy) thew a complete game in the circle, allowing five runs on nine hits and two walks. She did not record a strikeout.
Martzolf, Palmerino and McNeill all finished with two hits for Endicott. Martzolf also walked twice and had two RBI.
Mallozzi picked up the win, scattering seven hits and two walks while striking out two in 6 2/3 innings. Somerville allowed one hit, walked one and struck out one in locking down the one-out save.
