BEVERLY, Mass. -- The Bates baseball team scored a season-high 12
runs on a season-high 17 hits to prevail 12-11 over Endicott in a wild
one Tuesday afternoon.
A two-run sixth inning put the Bobcats (7-8) ahead for good but they
had to hang on for dear life after that. Bates matched their biggest
comeback victory of the season, falling behind by three runs to the
Gulls (7-5) before rallying for the win.
The Gulls scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Michael
DeDonato singled to start the frame and Matthew Paola doubled him to
third. A Bates error allowed Chris Seidl to reach first and DeDonato
scored on the play to put the Gulls up 1-0. The Gulls pulled off a
double steal and one out later Anthony Serina delivered an RBI ground
out to plate Paola.
Endicott added another run in the bottom of the third. Paola drew a
lead-off base-on-balls and Seidl got hit by a pitch. An Evan Lumpinski
single loaded the bases with nobody out.
Bates starter Anthony Telesca '17
(Holtsville, N.Y.) got Serina to hit into a double play, plating a run
but limiting the damage. Telesca got the next hitter to line out and end
the inning.
The right-hander picked up a no-decision, going three innings and
allowing three runs (two earned)
on three hits. He walked one and struck
out one.
Bates responded with four runs in the top of the fourth off Endicott starter Owen Bautze.
With one out Conor Reenstierna '16 (Lincoln, Mass.) singled. John Dinucci '17 (West Hartford, Conn.) doubled him to third and Reenstierna scored on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 3-1. Daniel Trulli '19 (Melrose, Mass.) drew a walk and Jake Shapiro '18 (Sandy, Utah) tripled home Dinucci and Trulli to tie the game at three.
With two away, Ryan McCarthy '17 (Plaistow, N.H.) doubled in Shapiro to put the Bobcats up 4-3.
But the Gulls didn't go away. They rallied to retake the lead in the bottom of the fourth. New pitcher Andrew Freeman '18
(Newton, Mass.) hit Corbin Hyde with a pitch to start the frame. A
sacrifice bunt moved Hyde all the way to third and Hunter Boyce got hit
by a pitch to put runners at the corners with one away.
A wild pitch scored Hyde and a DeDonato double put the Gulls up 5-4.
Connor Russell '18 (Cumberland, Maine) entered the game and walked Paola.
But after that he settled down and struck out a pair of batters to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth, Bates chased Bautze from the game when Evan Czopek '16 (Portland, Ore.) singled and Reenstierna got hit by a pitch with one out.
Dinucci greeted new pitcher Colby Morris with a single to load the
bases and Trulli tied the game with a sacrifice fly. Shapiro singled
home a pair of runs to give Bates a 7-5 lead.
But the Gulls rallied to tie the game again. In the bottom of the
fifth Serina singled to begin the inning. He advanced to third thanks to
a pair of wild pitches and scored on a Mike Kochiss double.
Hyde lay
down a sacrifice bunt and a Bates error allowed Kochiss to score, tying
the game at seven.
Russell (2-0) got out of the inning without any further damage thanks
to two more strike outs. He pitched two and two thirds innings out of
the bullpen, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits, walking one
and striking out six batters.
He got the win thanks to the Bobcats scoring two in the top of the sixth.
With one away, Christian Colon '19
(Hamden, Conn.) singled. Bates got another runner on base with two outs
when Czopek got hit by a pitch. That's when Reenstierna gave Bates the
lead they did not relinquish with a two-RBI double.
Mark Cunningham '16 (Canton, Mass.) tossed a scoreless seventh inning for the Bobcats.
Each team scored two runs in the eighth. McCarthy doubled to start
the top of the frame and Colon reached on a sacrifice bunt fielder's
choice as McCarthy was able to get to third safely. A Brendan Fox '17 (West Hartford, Conn.) RBI single plated McCarthy to extend the lead to 10-7.
With two outs, Bates loaded the bases and Dinucci singled in a run to put the Bobcats up 11-7.
Endicott got both runs back in the bottom of the eighth.
New pitcher Chris Ward '16 (Pasadena, Calif.) surrendered a lead-off triple to pinch hitter Brad Rebello. DeDonato singled in pinch runner Dan
Cacciola. One out later DeDonato advanced to third on a Seidl single.
Seidl stole second and with two away Serina drew a walk to load the
bases. Kochiss also drew a walk, forcing in a run and cutting the Bates
lead to 11-9. Ward got out of the inning by getting Hyde to ground out
to first.
In the top of the ninth, Asher MacDonald '18
(Hillsborough, N.C.) picked a perfect time to hit his first collegiate
home run. His long ball gave the Bobcats a much-needed insurance run as
they extended their lead to 12-9.
Rob DiFranco '16 (Melrose, Mass.) earned the save, but it wasn't easy. Michael Amato pinch hit to start the bottom of the ninth and singled. DiFranco got Josh Drew to hit into a double play but DeDonato reached on a single. That's when Paola launched a two-run homer to make the score 12-11 in favor of Bates.
DiFranco got Seidl to line out to center, ending the game, and the Bobcats breathed a sigh of relief.
Dinucci led the way on offense, going 4-5 with a double, two runs
scored, and an RBI. Fox went 3-6 with an RBI and Shapiro went 2-5 with a
triple, a run scored, and three RBIs. Reenstierna went 2-3 with two
runs scored, a walk, and two RBIs. McCarthy went 2-5 in the lead-off
spot with two doubles, a run scored, a walk, and an RBI. MacDonald went
2-5 with the big home run to seal the deal for Bates.
Every Bobcat position player either recorded a hit or scored a run in the game.
Bates begins NESCAC play Saturday when they take on Tufts in a
doubleheader at Leahey Field. First pitch of game one is set for 1:00
p.m.
