BOSTON -- The University of New England needed just 10 innings to register a doubleheader sweep of Wentworth Institute of Technology on Wednesday afternoon (Mar. 23), claiming results of 15-2 and 9-1 as the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) softball slate began for both sides at Carr Diamond.

Winners of six straight on the year and 13 in-a-row against the Leopards, the Nor'easters improve to 9-3 in 2016 (2-0 CCC). WIT drops to 4-6 overall (0-2 CCC).

Starting pitchers Abby Lambert and Katelyn Austin each worked three innings to get credit for the
respective wins in the circle. Caroline Schoenbucher paced the attack with four hits over the course of the day, and Avery Alberghini contributed three of her own. Team-highs of three runs scored and three RBI were shared by several players. Amanda Vallante upped her reached-base streak to 10 games.

A bases loaded walk in the top of the 1st in GAME 1 put the visitors in front, but Wentworth took advantage of a lead-off error in the bottom of the frame and plated two runs before the first out of the inning.

UNE gained the lead right back (3-2) in the 2nd, however, as Schoenbucher laced a two-RBI double to left. The cushion jumped from 4-2 to 6-2 in the 3rd, and then the Nor'easters tacked on seven runs in the 4th to assume full control. Kelly Murphy had an RBI-single in the stanza, Andrea Gosper drew another run-scoring walk, and Sydney Helmbrecht put a two-run single into center.

Paige Moore-Haskell capped the output in the 5th with a two-run single to left.

Schoenbucher tallied three of her hits in the contest, while Moore-Haskell and Helmbrecht each accounted for three RBI. Murphy, Gosper, Helmbrecht, and Vallante crossed the dish two times apiece.

Lambert worked through the two unearned runs for the Leopards before Melissa Sprague entered to retire the six batters she faced.

Haley Rutkey took the loss for WIT, which got two hits out of Heather Pinkston.

UNE kept rolling as GAME 2 kicked off, receiving back-to-back RBI-doubles with one away from Vallante and Lambert to take a 2-0 edge.

The Nor'easters added three in the second, with the middle run coming on an inside-the-park home run by Alberghini. Four more were notched in the 4th, including one each on two-out triples from Meghan Bolano and Gosper.

Alberghini was the only UNE player with two hits and two runs in the match; Lambert was the lone team member with two RBI. As a group, five of Big Blue's nine hits went for extra bases.

Austin struck out a pair while keeping WIT off the board for nine outs.

For the Leopards, Rutkey and Karson Sawyer had two hits apiece, and Rutkey drove in the run for the hosts in the 5th. Erica Norquist was charged with the setback.

UNE will enjoy a week off until a trip to Saint Joseph's College on Maine next Wednesday (3 p.m.).
