Colby Tops UMF in Back and Forth Battle

WATERVILLE, Maine – University of Maine at Farmington baseball (8-4) came back and either held a lead or tied the ballgame in four separate innings, but came up short in the end with a 7-6 non-conference loss at Colby College (4-8).

Colby jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two innings but UMF answered with three runs in the top of the third. With two outs in the inning, Ben Keene (Livermore, Maine/Spruce Mountain) roped a two-run single and then moved into scoring position after a Colby error. Tom Grady (Whitefield, Maine/Erskine Academy) followed with an RBI single of his own to give the Beavers their first lead of the day, 3-2.

The Mules retook the lead with two more runs in the bottom of the frame. The scoreboard would proceed to read all zeros until Farmington tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the sixth inning.

Riley Chickering (Otisfield, Maine/Oxford) lined a one-out double and then Mark Leahy (Rochester, N.H./Spaulding) drove Chickering home with an RBI single.

Sean Cabaniss (Vassalboro, Maine/Erskine Academy) launched a sacrifice fly to right field in the top of the seventh inning to plate a run and gave the Beavers a 4-3 advantage.

Colby bounced back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI groundout and a single.

Chickering hit a clutch two-out single in the top of the eighth as UMF tied the game once more. Chickering blooped a single into left center and Grayson Beressi (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) hustled home to beat the throw from the outfield

In the bottom of the eighth, the Mules drove home a run with a single for the final margin of victory.
Keene and Chickering finished 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and a run scored. Beressi was also 2-for-4 with a run scored.

Kyle Peterson (Bethel, Maine/Telstar) pitched a complete game for the Beavers with three strikeouts while giving up four earned runs on nine hits.
 
UMaine-Farmington starts conference play on Tuesday with a trip to Thomas College.
