BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. -- Freshman Ted Powers (Marshfield, Mass.)
netted five goals and a pair of assists for seven points in his
collegiate debut, while senior Reed McLean (Wilbraham, Mass.) matched
that total with a hat trick and four assists to lead Massachusetts
Maritime to a 16-7 non-league college men's lacrosse victory over Saint
Joseph's (Maine) Tuesday evening at Clean Harbors Stadium.
Powers and McLean combined for five goals as the host Buccaneers
(2-0) jumped out to a 6-0
advantage in the opening 20:09 of action, and
after freshman Michael Finn
(Quincy, Mass.) got the visiting Monks (1-2) on the board midway
through the second quarter, Massachusetts Maritime tallied four times in
the final 5:20 of the half to build a 10-1 advantage at the break. The
hosts extended their edge to 13-1 with three unanswered scores in the
third stanza, and Saint Joseph's scored six times in the final 15
minutes of play, including two each off the sticks of Finn and senior Jake O'Brien (Andover, Mass.), to account for the final score.
Freshman Cody Livermore (Ludlow, Mass.) added a pair of goals and
four assists to finish with six points in the triumph for the
Buccaneers, who also received two tallies and a helper from senior
Anthony Kurylak (Exeter, N.H.). Freshman Zack O'Brien (Lakeville,
Mass.) chipped in with goal and an assist for the winners, who also
received markers from juniors Steven Anderson (Crownsville, Md.), Ryan
McNeill (Burlington, Mass.) and Conor Greaney (Milton, Mass.) on the
night. Junior Joseph Landy (Chatham, N.J.) collected a pair of assists
for Massachusetts Maritime, which also received a helper off the stick
of sophomore Keaghan Bartley (Richmond, Va.).
Finn netted a hat trick in the setback for the Monks, who also
received a pair of goals and two assists from O'Brien as well as three
helpers from sophomore Brendan Barrett (East Sandwich, Mass.). Sophomore Cam Boucher (Lewiston, Maine) and freshman Ian Forbes (Dover, N.H.) each tallied for Saint Joseph's, which also received an assist off the stick of sophomore Luigi Grimaldi (Portland, Maine).
Senior James Klose (Ellicott City, Md.) picked up the win in goal
with six saves in 42-plus minutes of play for Massachusetts Maritime,
which also received a combined four stops from freshmen Jeffrey Statile
(Ipswich, Mass.) and Michael Dolan (McLean, Va.). Sophomore Connor Trainor
(Franklin, Mass.) made five saves in 54-plus minutes of action in the
setback for Saint Joseph's, which also received two stops from sophomore
Wyatt Porter
(Pittsfield, Mass.). The Buccaneers outshot the Monks by a 23-16
margin on goal in claiming their second straight series victory between
the two schools.
Massachusetts Maritime hosts SUNY-Maritime in opening round action of
the 2016 Maritime Lacrosse Classic on Friday afternoon at Clean Harbors
Stadium beginning at 5:00 p.m., while Saint Joseph's entertains Regis
in a non-league outing on Saturday afternoon at Deering Memorial Stadium
in Portland, Maine beginning at 1:00 p.m.
