THE RESILIENCY SERIES: BECOMING A PREPARED COMMUNITY

Scarborough, Maine -  Resilience speaks to a community’s ability to manage and cope with crisis, and it is at the heart of an important initiative under way in the Town of Scarborough. The Scarborough Public Library, 48 Gorham Road, will host The Resiliency Series—three original programs designed to introduce residents of Scarborough to the Scarborough Public Safety Resiliency Project.

The Resiliency Series will launch with a Community Forum on Wednesday, September 12, 2012 at 6:30 PM. B. Michael Thurlow, Scarborough Fire Chief and EMA Director, Robert Moulton, Scarborough Police Chief, and Dr. Ron Breazeale, creator of Maine Resilience, will introduce the history of the Scarborough Public Safety Resiliency Project, its impact on our community’s ability to cope with disasters, and the “11 Skills and Attitudes” needed to become a resilient citizen.

The series will continue with book discussions facilitated by Nancy Crowell, Library Director and member of the Resiliency Project team. Zeitoun by Dave Eggers will be discussed on Wednesday, October 3, 2012 at 6:30 PM, and Here if You Need Me by Kate Braestrup will be discussed on Wednesday, October 17, 2012 at 6:30 PM. Registration is required to participate in the book discussions by visiting the Reference Desk or calling 883-4723 option 4. Copies of the books will be provided.

The series will culminate on Tuesday, October 23, 2012 at 6:30 PM with an inspirational conversation with Kate Braestrup. Through her ministry as Chaplin for the Maine Warden Service, Kate has mentored both colleagues who were First Responders to tragic events, and families whose loved ones were victims of those tragedies. Kate also understands the importance of personal resiliency through her own private loss. In 1996, her first husband, Drew Griffith, was killed while on duty as a Maine State Trooper.

All programs in the seires will be held in the Library Meeting Room and are free and open to the public. For more information, visit the Library’s website at www.scarboroughlibrary.org. The series is made possible through a grant from the Maine Humanities Council.
