Southern Maine Rolls Past Husson 18-5
BANGOR, Maine -- Junior Aliza Jordan (Gorham, Maine) scored a career-high eight points as the University of Southern Maine women's lacrosse team scored a season-high 18 goals to take an 18-5 victory over Husson University in non-conference action Monday afternoon at Boucher Field.
The win was the third in the last four games for the Huskies and improved their overall record to 4-3. The Eagles dropped their second straight game to fall to 2-4 on the season.
Jordan scored five goals and dished off three assists for her eight points. She also scooped up a team-high six ground balls and had two draw controls and two caused turnovers.
Sophomore Allison Irish (Lyman, Maine/Massabesic) scored four goals for the Huskies. Rookie Alex Farley (Buxton, Maine/Bonny Eagle) had three goals and one assist, and junior Colleen Fleming (South Portland, Maine) tallied two goals and passed out three assists. Fleming also had a game-high eight draw controls.
USM rookie goalie Mariah Vaillancourt (Lewiston, Maine/Edward Little), making her first collegiate start, made six saves to earn her first win.
Five different players contributed goals for the Eagles. Rookie goalie Mallory Burchill (Kennebunk, Maine) stopped six shots. Freshman Maddy Olson (Phippsburg, Maine/Morse) earned seven draw controls for Husson, and senior Amanda Deshaies (Wells, Maine) had five.
Jordan scored four times in the opening half as the Huskies built an 11-4 lead after 30 minutes of play. Fleming and Farley each scored twice in the first half.
Following a Husson goal from freshman Korallei Fifield (Woolwich, Maine/Morse) with 6:05 remaining in the first half that made it 8-4, the Huskies scored 10 unanswered goals over the next 35 minutes to blow the game wide open. Sophomore Makenna Mont (Freetown, Mass./Apponequet Regional) snapped the run of USM goals with a down-goal in the final minute of play.
Southern Maine is back in action on Wednesday (4:30 p.m.) hosting Salem State University in a non-conference game at Hannaford Field. Husson will travel to Maine Maritime Academy on Wednesday (4 p.m.) for a North Atlantic Conference match.
