WATERVILLE, Maine -- Colby College's Sasha Fritts scored four goals and defender Jackie Brokaw had a big game, but Bowdoin College scored three of the final four goals and then held on for a 12-11 NESCAC women's lacrosse win Wednesday at Bill Alfond Field.
Katie Miller scored with 4:16 left in the game from Kate McAloon to break an 11-11 tie and send Bowdoin to the victory.
The two teams traditionally play a tight game and Wednesday was no exception. The Polar Bears improved to 9-3 overall and 4-3 in the league, while the Mules dropped to 6-5 overall and 2-5 in the league.
By the numbers
* Miller finished with four goals and one assist, while Natalie Rudin and Hannah Hirschfeld both had one goal and two assists for Bowdoin. Kara Finnerty and McAloon both had one goal and one assist.
* Sasha Fritts tied Miller for a game-high four goals, while teammate Taylor Moore had two goals and one assist. Emma Banks and Kendall Smith also had two goals. Robyn Pirie dished two assists.
* The Polar Bears had a 16-9 advantage in draw controls, with Eliza Denious and Finnerty both earning five. McAloon and Allison Williams both had two draws.
* McGara DeWan led the Mules with three draw controls. Grace Crowell and Grace Langmuir each had two draws.
* Finnerty had four ground balls and Paige Brown had three ground balls. McAloon added two caused turnovers.
* Jackie Brokaw had a big game defensively for Colby with three caused turnovers and five ground balls. Kelsey Otley added two caused turnovers and four ground balls, while fellow defender Melinda Edie had five ground balls. Fritts also had four ground balls.
* Bowdoin goaltender Kayli Weiss stopped 10 shots, while Mule keeper Izzy Scribano made nine saves.
Game highlights
* The Mules went up 10-9 after Moore scored with 13:45 remaining in the game. However, the Polar Bears scored three of the final four goals. Finnerty tallied on a free-position shot just 30 seconds after Moore's goal to tie it at 10-10.
* Miller put the Polar Bears on top 11-10 with her third goal from Hirschfeld with 12:28 to play. The Mules, though, bounced back to tie it at 11 when Smith tallied from Moore with 9:59 remaining.
* The Polar Bears had a fine start and took a 4-1 lead after 11 minutes. The Mules spent most of the half in comeback mode and finally tied the game at 6-6 on a Smith goal with 6:57 to intermission. Maddie Hatch put Colby up 7-6 with 4:09 remaining, but McAloon tied the game at halftime with 1:52 remaining.
* Bowdoin helped its own cause in the second half with an 8-2 margin in draw controls.
