Bowdoin is now 9-7 on the season (3-1 NESCAC). While Trinity drops to 7-9 overall on the season (2-2 NESCAC). Bowdoin and Trinity came into game one of their series both 2-1 in conference play, so this was a very important win for the Polar Bears, making them the top baseball team in the NESCAC.
Game Highlights
The Polar Bears came out on fire in this one, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. The first run came across the plate when Joe Gentile came up with the bases loaded and was granted first base on a catcher's interference call. Nick Sadler came home with the interference call, giving Bowdoin the early 1-0 lead.
With the bases still loaded, Austin Zakow was able to reach via base on balls, scoring Eric Mah and increasing the Bowdoin lead to 2-0.
With Polar Bears occupying every base, Colby Joncas delivered a 2-run single that scored Jack Wilhoite and Joe Gentile, making the score 4-0 in favor of Bowdoin.
Trinity did not take long to answer, despite being down four runs early. As they enjoyed a four-run first inning themselves.
The Bantams loaded the bases in the for Christian Orsini who hit a bases-clearing triple, scoring Johnny Stamatis, Matt Koperniak and Cooper Mooney, trimming the Polar Bear lead to one run at 4-3.
Orsini came across the plate via a wild pitch, tying the game at four in the bottom of the first inning.
Bowdoin re-took the lead in the top of the second as Gentile delivered a two-run single, scoring Mah and Sadler and giving the Polar Bears a 6-4 lead.
The Polar Bears tacked on another run in the second when Connor Lee hit a single that scored Brandon Lopez, making the Bowdoin lead 7-4.
Bowdoin had a huge seventh inning, as eight Polar Bears crossed the plate. The scoring in the seventh began as Mah hit a triple with the bases loaded, scoring Sadler, Joncas and Zakow.
Mah was then able to score on a wild pitch, giving Bowdoin the 11-4 lead in the seventh.
The scoring in the seventh inning continued for the Polar Bears when Wilhoite hit a RBI single that scored Lopez. The score went to 12-4 in favor of Bowdoin.
Zakow then came up to the plate with the bases loaded and cleared them all with a three-run double that scored Lee, Gentile and Wilhoite. Now 15-4 Polar Bears.
The Bantams tacked on another run in the eighth as Tyler Buckley hit a single that scored Alex Rodriguez, making the score 15-5.
Carter Snyder was called upon as a pinch hitter in the bottom of the ninth for Trinity and delivered with a RBI double that scored Brendan Pierce and trimmed the score to 15-6.
The Bantams wouldn't quit, as Mooney slugged a two-run home run that also plated Snyder and made the score 15-8 in favor of the Polar Bears.
By The Numbers
Gentile reached base four times for the Polar Bears, recording three hits and reaching via a walk. He also drove in two runners.
Mah went 2-for-6 with a triple and tallied three RBI for Bowdoin.
Zakow reached base three times for Bowdoin, going 1-for-3 with a double, two walks, and four RBI.
Joncas was 2-for-5 and drove in two Polar Bears.
Sadler recorded two hits and reached via base on balls and scored all three times he was on base.
Wilhoite also had two hits in six ABs, scoring two runs and hitting one in.
Lee and James McCarthy also recorded hits for Bowdoin.
The Polar Bears scored 15 runs on 15 hits in the win.
Mooney was able to get on base four times for the Bantams, with two hits including his ninth inning home run, two walks, tallying two RBI and two runs.
Orsini went 1-for-5 with a triple, three RBI and one run scored.
Snyder went 1-for-1 with a pinch-hit double for Trinity.
Pierce, Koperniak, Rodriguez, Buckley and Matthew Toth also recorded one hit apiece in the game.
