BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Tucker Dietrick tied the game with 1:33 remaining and then assisted on Charlie Lynch's game-winning goal with just five seconds left to lift Colby College to a thrilling 8-7 win over rival Bowdoin College in NESCAC men's lacrosse.
The Mules needed a victory and came up big on the road. Colby is 4-5 overall and 2-5 in NESCAC play heading into Saturday's 1 p.m. road game at Williams College. The Ephs are ranked eighth in New England.
"Our guys showed tremendous grit and battled for 60 minutes," Colby head coach Guy Van Arsdale said. "We continue to grow as a team and now I am excited to see how we handle success."
Bowdoin, after a slow start to the season, is ranked fourth in New England and had its eight-game winning streak snapped by the Mules.
By the numbers
* Dietrick (pictured) led all scorers with four goals and one assist. Riley Bergstrom, C.J. Hassan, Lynch, and Derek Muse also tallied for the Mules. Muse scored his first collegiate goal.
* Daniel Buckman had two goals and two assists for Bowdoin.
* Face-offs were a key for Colby, with both teams winning nine on the night. Joe Paolatto went 6-for-11 and Jung Shin was a solid 3-for-7.
* John Pappas led the way with six ground balls for the Mules. Graham Lian had four ground balls and teammate Rocky Tonkel had three caused turnovers.
* Colby had a big advantage in goal with C.J. Layton stopping 14 shots, including eight in the first half. Bowdoin had just four saves in the game and only one in the second half.
* Colby's last win against Bowdoin was a 13-9 victory in 2015 in Waterville. The last road win over the Polar Bears was in 2014.
Game highlights
* The Polar Bears took a 6-5 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Mules scored three of the final four goals in the final 15 minutes. Dietrick scored unassisted with 11:53 remaining to tie the game at 6-6. However, Jake Crossman put Bowdoin back up 7-6 with 9:37 to play.
* Dietrick scored from Billy Jacobs with 1:33 remaining to give the Mules a tie game and some momentum.
* Shin won the face-off for the Mules and Pappas picked up the ground ball. Colby turned the ball over with 41 seconds remaining, but Lynch had some early heroics when he caused a turnover with 25 seconds left.
* Lynch's game-winning goal came off a scramble in front as Dietrick found Lynch in the middle. He ripped a turnaround shot for the score.
