CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy women's lacrosse fell to Husson University 15-8 on Wednesday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at Ritchie Field.
With the loss the Mariners fall to 2-4 overall and 1-3 in the NAC, while the Eagles improve to 3-4 on the season and 3-1 in the conference. Maine Maritime returns to action on Monday, March 9 at Mitchell at 4:00 pm for a non-conference matchup.
Maddy Olsen put the Eagles on the board first, but the Mariners responded with back-to-back goals from Shelby O'Neil (Bar Harbor, Maine) and Madison Barry (Stoneham, Mass.) to take a 2-1 lead. The two teams exchanged goals before the Eagles scored two-straight to close out the half with a 4-3 advantage.
Husson scored six-unanswered goals to open up the second half. Madison Savary (Bath, Maine) tallied back-to-back free position goals to close the Eagles' lead to 10-5, and consecutive goals from Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) and O'Neil closed the lead to 12-8 at 6:14. The Eagles scored three goals in the final six minutes to hang on for the 15-8 victory.
Savary led the Mariners with a hat-trick, two assists, three ground balls and two caused turnovers, while both O'Neil and Barry net two goals. O'Neil also chipped in with four ground balls and four caused turnovers, while Barry tallied four ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. Adams added a goal, a team-high five ground balls and two caused turnovers.
Paige Daigle led the Eagles with four goals, while Amanda Deshaies and Maddy Olsen each net hat-tricks. Deshaies also dished out three assists, while leading all players with 11 draw controls.
Christina Wilson (East Granby, Conn.) recorded 12 saves in net in the loss for the Mariners, while Mallory Burchill tallied seven saves in the victory for the Eagles.
The Eagles edged the Mariners in groundballs, 28-24 and draw controls 16-8.
