Husson Baseball Splits Wild Sunday Double Header with New England College, 0-2, 11-10

BANGOR, Maine- Husson University Baseball Team (7-11, 3-3 NAC) split a doubleheader with the New England College Pilgrims (16-6, 5-3 NAC), 0-2, 11-10, at Alfond Diamond on the Dr. John P. Winkin Sports Complex on Sunday afternoon.
Game 1: New England College 2, Husson 0
How it Happened:
The Pilgrims scored the only runs of the game in the second inning as Andrew Castano (Inwood, N.Y.) scored on a throwing error, then Jeam Castillo (Lynn, Mass.) lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Jameson Carey (Amherst, Mass.), to give New England College a 2-0 lead they would hold for the entire game.

  • Austin Smith (2-2) (Lincoln, Maine) pitched seven innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on
    five hits while striking out five and walking two.

  • Nick Powers  (5-1) (Malden, Mass.) pitched seven innings and allowed five hits while striking out five and walking two.
Game 2: Husson 11, New England College 10
How it Happened:
The Eagles jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Chapman lined a base-hit through the left side to score Wong. Sam Huston followed that up with a double to score Chapman and Conor Maguire (Ellsworth, Maine).
The Pilgrims responded in a big way in the fourth inning as they scored six runs. Castano grounded out to shortstop to bring home Evan Delaney (Hadley, Mass.). Retsyn Ootton (Pawtucket, R.I.) struck out then reached as the ball got passed the catcher that scored Xavier Nunez (Lawrence, Mass.) to cut the lead to one. Luis Atiles continued the scoring with an RBI-single. Manuel Andujar (West New York, N.Y.) ended the offensive explosion with a ground-rule RBI-double to make it 6-3.
The Eagles tied the game in the bottom half of the inning with three runs of their own. Jonah Martin (Milton, Vt.) led it off with a RBI-triple to score Whitten. Wong recorded a sacrifice fly that scored Martin. Chapman finished off the scoring in the inning with a RBI-single.
Eagles added two more runs in the fifth inning as Wong laid down a perfect bunt to score Ethan Daigneault (Waterboro, Maine) to take a 7-6 lead. Maguire lifted another sacrifice fly to center field. Whitten scored and gave the Eagles a 8-6 lead.
NEC tied the game up in the sixth inning as Nunez crushed a 2-run RBI-double.  
The Pilgrims blasted a home run in the seventh inning as Castillo hit one over the right field fence to make it 9-8 NEC. Andujar added an insurance run with a RBI-single through the left side.  
The Eagles finished off the game in the bottom half of the inning. Guerrette walked with the bases loaded to score Martin to make it 10-9 NEC. Chapman continued the inning with a RBI-single to tie the game at 10. The Eagles walked off with the victory as Huston got hit by a pitch to score Maguire. The Eagles won 11-10.

  • Cam Graham (Littleton, Maine) pitched 3.2 innings and allowed six runs (one earned) on four hits while striking out two and walking four.
  • Ben Bernier (Minot, Maine) pitched 1.1 inning and gave up a run and two walks while striking out one.
  • Dustin Smith (Lincoln, Maine) pitched an inning and gave up two runs on two hits while striking out two and walking one.
  • Jacob Gauvin (1-1) (Bucksport, Maine) pitched an inning and gave up two runs on three hits.
Batters: New England College
  • Castillo with a RBI, a hit, and two runs scored.
  • Atiles scored two runs, recorded two hits and a RBI.
  • Andujar with two hits and two RBI.
Pitchers: New England College
  • Shayne Audet (Springfield, Mass.) pitched four innings and allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out seven and walking two.
  • Selah Dalomba (Amherst, Mass.) pitched 2.1 inning and allowed
  • Joseph Pascucci (1-1) (Wayne, N.J.) failed to get an out as he allowed a run on two hits while walking a batter.

Husson Baseball will continue their 8-game homestand as they take on UMaine-Farmington for a doubleheader at Alfond Diamond on the John P. Wikin Complex on Tuesday, April 11th. First game starting at 2 PM and second game at 4 PM.
