Fakorede (Newark, N.J.) will be the fourth seed out of 15 athletes in the 35-pound weight throw, based on his season-best mark of 19.05 meters (62-6) achieved Saturday at Tufts. That performance vaulted Fakorede over four former All-Americans onto Bates' all-time top 10 performance list in the event, into seventh place.
Margitza (Waterville, Maine) will be the seventh seed in the shot put, based on his season-best
distance of 16.77 meters, or 55-0.25, also achieved at Tufts on Saturday. Margitza's personal-best mark also moved him past former All-American Ethan Waldman '11 into third place on Bates' all-time performance list in the event.
For each men's individual event contested, including the heptathlon, the top 15 declared student-athletes were accepted into the competition. The championships will be held March 11-12 at the Charles Benson Bear '39 Recreation and Athletic Center in Grinnell, Iowa, with Grinnell College serving as the official host.
Bates senior and cross country All-American Allen Sumrall (Albuquerque, N.M.) narrowly missed running at his second NCAA Championship this academic year; Sumrall ranked 18th in Division III this season in the 5,000 meters, with his 14:40.64 run at Tufts on Saturday.
Both Fakorede and Margitza were also named New England All-Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, for ranking among the top three in their events in the crowded New England region. Margitza received two All-New England nods, in both the shot and the weight throw.
