LOULE, Portugal – Twenty-two U.S. gymnasts advanced to the finals of the 2012 Loule Cup based on performances at the qualification rounds on Sept. 6 at the Loule (Portugal) Municipal Sports Hall. The top eight athletes in each event qualified to finals. Competition runs through Sept. 8 and also includes a World Cup event.
Audrey Ghanian, Holmdel, N.J./ETA, leads the open women's rankings in trampoline with a score of 87.100 with Great Britain's Penny Mitchell in second (86.910) and Sophie Gardner in third (86.140).
In the junior men's trampoline, three U.S. gymnasts advanced to the finals. Sam Chiacchia of Colorado Springs, Colo./High Country Gymnastics Academy, placed third at 93.685, and Cody Gesuelli of Middletown, N.J./ETA, and Joseph Kozlowski of Avondale, Pa./ETA, finished fifth and sixth, respectively, despite both scoring a 92.205. Sweden's Timoteus Karlsson topped the preliminary rankings at 96.990, with Russia's Andrey Yudi second at 95.010.
For the 13-14 men's trampoline, Nathan Miller of Summerfield, N.C./Ultimate Air, qualified to finals in seventh place scoring 81.730 and Isaac Rowley of Allen, Texas/Eagles Wings, qualified in eighth with a score of 80.905. Great Britain's Joshua Newman leads the qualification with a score of 90.040, followed by Russia's Danil Bulakov at 86.695, and Denmark's Benjamin Salo Kjer at 84.655.
The top four women in the open double mini division all scored a 66.300: Brazils Mariana Rodrigues Carvalho de Aquino and Andressa Ferreira Sandes, first and second respectively; Kristle Lowell of Orland Park, Ill./Branch Gymnastics, third and Erin Jauch of Crystal Lake, Ill./Fox Valley Tumbling and Trampoline, fourth.
Madi Webster of Odon, Ind./Tumbling Express, and Miranda Maldonado of Amarillo, Texas/The Palaestra, went one-two in the junior women's double mini-trampoline prelims with a 63.900 and 62.150, respectively. Russia's Ksenia Naumenko rounded out the top three at 61.625.
Garrett Day of Bedford, Va./Lynchburg Academy, earned the highest prelim score in the men's 13-14 double mini division of 68.000. Tanner Robinson of Anaheim, Calif./World Elite, is fourth at 62.600. Spain's Eduardo Novelle was second at 63.400, and Portugal's Tiago Sampaio Romao third at 63.100. On the women's side, Hally Piontek of Warrensburg, Mo./Kansas City Trampoline, led the prelims with her 62.850. Also qualifying for finals are Courtney Walsh of Red Bank, N.J./ETA, 60.075, fifth, and Sarah Webster of Valley View, Texas/Elite Champion, seventh. Mandie DiMarco of Metairie, Texas/Elmwood, just missed the finals, finishing ninth at 58.000.
Patrick Lyell of Kenner, La./Elmwood, finished fourth in men's 11-12 double mini-trampoline with a score of 62.400. Rhys Northover of Great Britain is in the lead with 63.000, followed by Maxim Arkhipov of Russia with 62.500 and Jodo Felix of Portugal in third with the same score as Lyell, 62.400. Armand Reichelt of Scottsdale, Ariz./Scottsdale Gymnastics, is sixth with 60.700. Luke Ferrante of Huntsville, Ala./Matrix, grabbed the final spot in the finals by finishing eighth with a score of 60.100.
The USA women dominated the women's 11-12 double mini competition, sweeping the top three places. Carly Townsend of Foothill Ranch, Calif./World Elite, is in the lead with 62.450, followed by Rachel Thevenot of Metairie, Texas/Elmwood, at 61.775, and Gretchen Schultz of Destrehan, La./Elmwood, at 61.525 in second and third, respectively. Alyssa Oh of Rocklin, Calif./Technique T&T, also qualified to finals finishing in fifth place with a 60.650.
