BRUNSWICK, ME — Pastor Jonathan Larssen has joined the Spiritual Care program at Mid Coast–Parkview Health. In his new role, Larssen joins a team of five professional chaplains, providing spiritual care for the patients, families, and staff of Mid Coast Hospital, Mid Coast Senior Health Center, and CHANS Home Health Care.

“Spiritual care can be an important part of the healing process for people experiencing health concerns or crisis in their lives or the lives of loved ones,” said Randee Reynolds, Vice President of Community Health at Mid Coast–Parkview Health. “Spiritual care services are fully integrated throughout the Mid Coast–Parkview Health system, offering consistent and professional support in a variety of disciplines to patients and families at all phases of life.”

In addition to the chaplains, the Spiritual Care team includes 35 specially trained volunteers who provide spiritual support 24-hours per day, seven days per week. The Spiritual Care program offers support for persons in all clinical areas, including maternity, emergency, oncology, rehabilitation, and hospice care, and is provided at Mid Coast Hospital, Parkview Medical Center, and Mid Coast Senior Health Center. People of all different faith groups are accommodated, as well as those with no affiliation or religious tradition.

Reverend Gordon Cook has been with the Spiritual Care program at Mid Coast since 2003. “Services are delivered with respect, sensitivity, confidentiality, and in line with the individual’s personal beliefs,” he said. “Our chaplains have high-level training in areas of psychology, theology, religious studies, and human services, while our volunteers have life experience that gives insight into human needs and behaviors.”

Reynolds commented, “With the addition of Jonathan, we will enhance our spiritual care services across all of our service areas, as well as incorporate a spiritual component to our community health and wellness offerings.”

Ordained as a Seventh-day Adventist Minister, Larssen earned his undergraduate degree from Newbold College in Binfield, England and a Masters in Divinity from Andrews University Theological Seminary in Berrien Springs, Michigan. He completed his Clinical Pastoral Education at Meriter Hospital in Madison, Wisconsin. Most recently, he was a Senior Pastor with the Illinois Conference of Seventh-Day Adventists.

“I am honored to join the passionate team of spiritual caregivers at Mid Coast–Parkview Health,” said Larssen. “I look forward to working with the team to expand our coverage and develop new programs that focus on overall health and wellness through the mind, body, and spirit.”
