Paddle the St. George with the Georges River Land Trust

Rockland, Maine - Join the Georges River Land Trust (GRLT) for a canoe/kayak tour of an especially beautiful section of the St. George River on Saturday, September 29, 2012, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. This event is part of the Great Maine Outdoor Weekend series and will be led by GRLT’s AmeriCorps member and experienced paddler, Jackie Stratton. The trip will leave from Ayers Park in Union, ME, located on Route 235 just south of the Union Common, where there is ample parking and a convenient launching area. Paddlers should bring a canoe or kayak, life jackets, a snack/lunch, and water.

The paddle leaves Seven Tree Pond toward Round Pond, the site of several settlements of early residents. From Round Pond it proceeds upstream again toward the current location of the Union Fairgrounds. Much of the river in this area retains its peaceful and undeveloped character, a quality that the Georges River Land Trust is working to maintain. It’s a beautiful time of year in the middle watershed, so come out and enjoy the fall colors and crisp air.

This paddle is part of Great Maine Outdoor Weekend (GMOW), a series of events lead by outdoor oriented organizations celebrating the how, where, and what of being active outside in Maine. GMOW’s goal is to connect our friends and neighbors with the natural world, to promote fun, physical activity, and good health. GRLT’s paddle will take place on National Public Lands Day, the nation’s largest, single-day volunteer event for public lands in the United States and it gives us an opportunity to celebrate all of the public lands we have here in Maine, from our local land trust’s parcels to Acadia National Park!

The Land Trust was founded in 1987 and its mission is to conserve and steward the natural resources of the river and its watershed for the public benefit. Further information on this event and all other GRLT activities is available at www.grlt.org. The Land Trust can be contacted directly at info@grlt.org or (207) 594-5166.
