Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame to induct 4 new members in October

Rockland, Maine - The Midcoast Sports Hall of Fame will induct 4 new members to its Hall during the 6th annual induction ceremony and banquet on Saturday Night, October 20th at the Rockland Elks Lodge.  The 2012 inductees include the late Albert “Foggy” Bennett, Andrew Williamson III, George Gould and James Lombardo.

Bennett from Camden was a standout at Camden High School in the late 1920s, where he excelled in baseball and basketball, including pitching a playoff win in 1927 to break a 4 way tie and give Camden High School the Knox Lincoln Championship, while scoring more than of half of his team’s points for the 1927-28 Camden basketball team that claimed the Knox Lincoln Title.  In the 1930s, Bennett was a standout pitcher including leading Camden to 3 Twilight League championships, including the 1935 State Title.

Andrew Williamson
Williamson from Jefferson, attended High School Lincoln Academy, where he lettered in baseball, basketball and track between 1947 through 1951, and then while attending Bowdoin College from 1951 to 1955, Williamson played football and ran track.  After college, Williamson returned to Lincoln Academy where he was the school’s long time Track Coach, helping lead the Eagles to the 1959 State Championship and 10 straight Knox Lincoln Championships from 1961 to 1970.

Gould of Waldoboro playing basketball and baseball while running track and cross country in the 1960s at Waldoboro High, before attending CMVTI, lettering in basketball and baseball. Gould began his coaching career at Medomak Valley High School in 1982 and over the last 30 years, he has coached over 60 Varsity Teams and several sub Varsity teams, including coaching the Girls’ Cross Country team for the last 27 years, Girls Track and Field for 15 years and Girls Basketball for 11 years.  Gould has collected over 1,300 varsity wins, 9 KVAC Championships, 4 Regional Championship and leading the 1989 Medomak Valley Girls Cross Country team to a 64-0 record and the State Title.

Albert Bennett
Lombardo of Owls Head played 4 years of varsity baseball and 2 years of varsity football for Rockland District High School, including helping lead the Tigers’ Baseball team to the 1963 KVAC championship, hitting .353 during the season while going 8-1 on the mound.  After the Navy and College, Lombardo was a standout in men’s softball, leading Goldsmith’s of Rockland to State Championships in 1980 and 1986, with the 1986 team traveling to Spokane, Washington to represent Maine in the National Fast Pitch Tournament.

The Hall will also name its Male and Female Midcoast High School Student Athlete of the Year for 2012 and will honor 2 Championship teams from the past for their great accomplishments during the banquet.
