Travis Shaw and Xander Bogaerts Hit Back-to-Back Homers as Sea Dogs Continue Surge In Eastern League Playoff Race

Portland, Maine- Brandon Workman worked seven strong innings and Travis Shaw and Xander Bogaerts hit back-to-back home runs as the Portland Sea Dogs defeated the Binghamton Mets 4-3 Friday night before a crowd of 6,033 at Hadlock Field. The Sea Dogs have now won six in a row and 10 of their last 11 as Portland continues a serious late season playoff push.

The Sea Dogs are 29-12 since the All-Star break. With Friday's win Portland improves to 65-66 on the season and is 4.5 games out of a playoff spot.

Workman improved to 3-0 in his third Double-A start. He matched a season high firing seven innings Friday night allowing one run on four hits. He struck out seven and did not walk a batter. The 24 year-old retired 15 of the first 16 batters he faced. In the fifth inning he threw just seven pitches, all of them strikes.

Through five innings, the only base runner Workman allowed was a lead-off single to Eric Campbell in the second. The Mets would manage to scratch across a run in the sixth inning when Pedro Zapata tripled to lead-off the inning and came home to score on a bunt single by Juan Lagares.

Portland never trailed in the contest taking a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Jeremy Hazelbaker extended his hit streak to eight games with his team leading sixth triple which scored Ryan Dent. Bryce Brentz picked-up his team leading 72nd RBI with a single to score Hazelbaker.

In the eighth inning the Sea Dogs added a pair of insurance runs when Travis Shaw and Xander Bogaerts hit back-to-back home runs off Gonzalez German (7-11) extending the lead to 4-1. Shaw's home run was his second since joining the Sea Dogs on August 1st and went off the light tower in right field. Boagerts connected for his fifth home run in 14 Double-A games.

The two home runs turned out to be huge for the Sea Dogs as Wilmer Flores hit a two run homer off Caleb Clay in the ninth inning bringing the Mets within one at 4-3. Clay would strike out Jefry Marte to end the game earning his eighth save. Clay allowed two runs on three hits in two innings of relief.

The Sea Dogs will look to extend their win streak to a season high seven games Saturday night at 6:00 PM against the Mets.
