Gardening Through the Ages‏

Camden/Rockport, Maine - Belfast gardener and designer Terry Hire will lead a lecture titled “A Brief History of Gardening” at Merryspring Nature Center on Tuesday, August 28 at 12:00 noon.

Gardens have changed in form and function over the past millennium. Hire’s presentation will span time and distance to examine historical garden design. Starting with the gardens of the Roman Empire, the talk will expand to highlight garden designs of the Middle Ages, including Muslim and Monastery gardens, up through the gardens of the European Renaissance, and on to the gardens of today.

Hire relocated to Belfast from Tennessee in 1982. In 1987, He founded Design Alternatives, an interior design company. His Bayside gardens have been featured in Gardens, Maine Style: Act II by Rebecca Sawyer-Fay and Lynn Karlin, in “Perennials Magazine”, and on the cover of the 2012 Down East Calendar.

This presentation is part of the Summer Talk Series, cosponsored by Camden National Bank and Jaret & Cohn Real-Estate.

Admission to the Tuesday Talks is free to Merryspring members and children, with a nominal $5 fee for non-members.

Merryspring is a member-supported, non-profit nature education center and park located at the end of Conway Road just off Rt. 1 by the Hannaford shopping plaza in Camden. For more information, call Merryspring at 236-2239
