Penobscot Bay Day

An All-Day Celebration on August 25 at PMM!

August 17, 2012 - Free admission, live music, demonstrations, children's crafts, great food and summertime games galore! All this and more at Penobscot Bay Day from 10 a.m to 5 p.m. on August 25 at Penobscot Marine Museum.
This season, PMM is featuring Summer Folk: The Tourists of Penobscot Bay, a campus-wide exhibit exploring the history of tourism from 1890 to 1960. In multiple campus venues, the exhibit explores changes in lodging, transportation, recreation, demographics and the social milieu of tourism through recreated hotel and guest house environments, vintage photography, old advertising and marketing materials, steamship memorabilia, postcards, antique sporting goods, clothing, boats, and more. If you haven't had a chance to see Summer Folk, Penobscot Bay Day is a great time to do so!
When summer folk were not out on the water or on the golf or tennis courts, they played lawn games, cards, and board games. On Penobscot Bay Day, enjoy all manner of summer games from bocci, badminton and croquet to backgammon, chess, checkers and, for the serious (or not so serious) gamers, a cribbage tournament from 12 - 4 p.m. There's something for everyone - so dust off your competitive edge and join in the fun!
Amongst all the gaming, be sure to save time for the featured events. Touch Tank in the morning from 10:30 - 11:30 a.m., join oceanographer Mike Dunn for an up close and personal look at the inhabitants of our Touch Tank in the Old Town Hall. The Touch Tank is home to crabs, starfish, a lobster, and other marine animals native to Penobscot Bay. Here on campus from May through October, it spends much of the winter at various elementary schools, providing learning opportunities to area students. Also in Old Town Hall, enjoy our featured exhibit Sea Lives, the artworks of artist Sonja Weber Gilkey as well as Gone Fishing: Maine's Sea Fisheries.
Throughout the day, stop by the Boat House and make a "beach globe" with members of the museum's education staff. Beach globes are great projects for children as well as a wonderful way to preserve summer memories.
Sample the wares of local food vendors, browse our Museum Store for a wonderful selection of offerings by Maine artisans, and, from 2 - 5 pm, kick off your shoes, relax and enjoy the lively mix of rock, folk, blues and Celtic music of the Mike and Susie Fay Band from Penobscot.
Immerse your senses in a fun-filled day at the museum.
