September at One Longfellow Square

Portland, Maine - The following are events going on at One Longfellow Square during the month of September.

LAUREN RIOUX AND BRITTANY HAAS
Friday, September, 7th, 2012
8:00 PM | $15 adv/$18 door

Two fiddlers from widely respected bands (Brittany Haas of Crooked Still, and Lauren Rioux from Darol Anger's Republic of Strings) are joining forces. As a duo, the women bring their extensive knowledge of Appalachian music and experience of being at the forefront of the contemporary string band scene, as well as the strength and depth of seasoned performers. Their music is steeped in groove, emotion-filled and harmonically progressive. The joy they share on stage as they weave and dance through duets on their instruments and vocals is palpable among audience.

Maine's Lauren Rioux fiddles from the heart with soul and joy. This, in combination with her warm tone, elegantly expressive phrasing and playful style, leads her to create music that artfully explores themes of both heartache and hope. With her debut album, All the Brighter, Lauren presents a beautiful collection of melodies that embrace and celebrate the richness of life.

Lauren performs regularly with Darol Anger, Scott Law, and Mike Block in the band Republic of Strings, and with Scott Nygaard and Joe Walsh in Crow Molly. She has shared the stage with Bruce Molsky, Tim O'Brien, Mike Marshall, Vasen, Laurie Lewis, Natalie Haas and others at such festivals as Wintergrass, Delfest, Rockygrass, and Celtic Connections.

Brittany Haas is a 5-string fiddle player from the Bay Area, currently residing in Nashville. She grew up honing her craft in fiddle camps nationwide, and came to her unique sound through the old time fiddling of Bruce Molsky and and the innovative stylings of Newgrass pioneer Darol Anger. She began touring with Darol's Republic of Strings at the age of 14. She simultaneously studied baboons in the evolutionary biology department of Princeton University and joined the seminal chamber-grass Boston band Crooked Still. She has also performed with Yonder Mountain String Band, Tony Trischka, Alasdair Fraser & Natalie Haas (her cellist sister), Abigail Washburn, and The Waybacks. She played on Steve Martin's Grammy Award-winning CD, "The Crow," and performed in his band on Letterman and SNL. She released her debut self-titled solo album at 17, produced by Darol Anger and featuring Bruce Molsky, Mike Marshall, Alison Brown and others.

BEAUSOLEIL |
Saturday, September 15th, 2012
8:00 PM $30 adv/$35 door

Every genre has its defining figureheads: Woody Guthrie, Duke Ellington, Elvis, Hank Williams, The Beatles, etc.  When it comes to contemporary traditional Cajun music, there is BeauSoleil. For the past 34 years Lafayette, Louisiana's BeauSoleil has carried the torch of tradition while continuing to chart uncharted waters with ingenuity and innovation.

Since their inception in 1975, BeauSoleil has not only spearheaded a cultural Renaissance but has elevated Cajun music to one of domestic and international acclaim. Along the way, they have appeared regularly on Garrison Keillor's A Prairie Home Companion and garnered eleven Grammy nominations. In 1998, they became the first Cajun band to win a Grammy for their L'Amour Ou La Folie effort in the traditional folk category.

While they've introduced their sources of inspiration, Dennis McGee, Canray Fontenot, Varise Connor, Wade Fruge, Dewey Balfa, Amédéé Ardoin and Freeman Fontenot, to new audiences, they've also daringly blended zydeco, Tex-Mex, western swing, blues, New Orleans traditional jazz and Caribbean calypso into their framework. As a result, any ethnomusicologist would be hard pressed to speculate where Cajun music would be today without the contributions of BeauSoleil.

JOY KILLS SORROW/ Fish and Bird opens |
Thursday, September, 20th, 2012
8:00 PM | $12 adv/$15 door

Some people prefer pop music that behaves like math: once a few familiar variables have been determined- female vocals or male? Acoustic guitar or electric? - the end result should be easy to predict, and always sound the same. That's not the Joy Kills Sorrow method. This Boston-based string band favors a more unpredictable approach relying on musical chemistry and improvisation. Hence the title of their sophomore album, This Unknown Science. All of the members have been touted as virtuosos, and the early twenty-somethings effortlessly hunt for unexpected outcomes and new discoveries. "We like experimenting and stretching boundaries," explains guitarist Matthew Arcara, an acoustic player gaining a name for himself as both an upand- coming guitar slinger and luthier. Arcara has taken home several honors at various guitar competitions including Winfield's National Flatpicking Championship in 2006.

Joy Kills Sorrow brings together an eclectic mix of musicians who each have classical and/or jazz conservatory training, though collectively, they ambitiously utilize their years of study to hone a new acoustic territory yet discovered by many of today's top artists. It's an amalgamation of lamenting music of the heartland, singular stories of heartache and laughter, beautiful string arrangements, and five musicians who grew up listening to indie-rock, jazz, and pop music that churn out impressive tunes with an incredibly contemporary sensibility.

Fish & Bird's latest album, Every Whisper is a Shout Across the Void, marks a major step forward for the young Canadian band. The project began in Victoria, BC as an acoustic duo, comprised of Taylor Ashton (banjo, guitar, vocals) and Adam Iredale-Gray (fiddle). On their 2007 self titled debut, their take on 'folk' included original songs in odd time signatures and traditional murder ballads with rock beats. Today, Fish & Bird is a five-piece indie-folk powerhouse. They employ weird vocal improv sections, they rock out in 11/8, sometimes it seems like they're playing bluegrass, and they might make you cry.

JULIAN LAGE, SOLO JAZZ GUITAR |
Friday, September, 21, 2012
8:00 PM | $18 adv/$20 door

Hailed by All About Jazz as "a giant in the making," Lage grew up in California and was the subject of an Academy Award-nominated documentary, Jules at Eight. He gained pivotal early exposure as a protégé of legendary vibraphonist Gary Burton, recording and touring with Burton on two projects in 2004 and 2005. Other recent high-profile sideman appearances include work with longtime friend and close collaborator, pianist Taylor Eigsti. His 2009 debut disc, Sounding Point, received a Grammy nomination.

Lage's wide-ranging musical interests and talents range from chamber music, American folk and bluegrass to Latin, world, string-band tradition and modern jazz. His recent trio appearances with fiddle master Mark O'Connor (also collaborating with the violinist's group, "Hot Swing") and bass giant John Patitucci have only strengthened the imprint of Americana and acoustic music on his work.

In fact, Lage debuted on record at age 11 on Dawg Duos (1999), featuring David Grisman, Vassar Clements, Edgar Meyer, Béla Fleck and more. "Those were my heroes," Lage marvels.

TRICKY BRITCHES AND DARLINGSIDE |
Thursday, September, 27th, 2012
8:00 PM | $10 adv/$12 door

Tricky Britches, a talented young string band from Portland, Maine, plays roots music for the 21st century. From their early days of mastering heel-stomping, old-time fiddle tunes, they have progressed their repertoire into a fusion of original folk songs and bluegrass standards. In the summer of 2010 the boys successfully toured thirteen countries in Europe before returning stateside to focus on building a following throughout the eastern United States. Tricky Britches is Tyler Lienhardt (vocals, washboard, fiddle), Jed Bresette (vocals, guitar, bass), Seth Doyle (vocals, mandolin, harmonica, guitar, bones), and Ryan "Bear" Wilkinson (vocals, tenor banjo, guitar, bass.).

Under one roof in western New England's Pioneer Valley, Darlingside came together with five songwriters, a mandolin, a cello and violin, guitars and drums, a chorus of voices, and a van named Chauncey. Holed up in their home between a cornfield and the Connecticut River, they forged a seamless, exhilarating sound at the intersection of rock, classical, and folk music. The band is currently rolling out an innovative subscription album, Pilot Machines, and shaking rafters along the eastern seaboard with their vibrant live shows.

STEPHANE WREMBLE |
Friday, September, 28th, 2012
8:00 PM | $20 adv/$25 door

He's been called "a revelation" by Rolling Stone. Woody Allen recruited him to score the theme to the 2012 Academy Award winning film Midnight in Paris, and he performed live during this year's Academy Awards telecast. To say that French-born guitarist/composer Stephane Wrembel, who learned his craft among the Gypsies at campsites in the French countryside, has already had a remarkable career would be an understatement. But this virtuoso, who is now Brooklyn-based, has truly just begun to make his mark as one of the most original guitar voices in contemporary music.

Although he built his reputation as a stylist in the mode of the iconic French Sinti guitarist Django Reinhardt, Wrembel now revels in transcending and expanding. "I'm digging deeper and deeper into my roots," he says about his current work, touching upon everything from blues to flamenco to rock. Wrembel possesses superior compositional skills; his melodies burst with a panoply of textures and colors, moods and emotions.

THE FISHTANK ENSEMBLE |
Saturday, September 29th, 2012
8:00 PM | $12 adv/$15 door

The LA Weekly calls them "cross pollinated gypsy music....one of the most thrilling young acts on the planet." Formed in 2005 and playing everywhere from the hippest LA clubs to festivals, cultural centers, museums, parades, and even on the street, the band includes two explosive violins, the world's best slap bass player, musical saw, flamenco and gypsy jazz guitar, trombone, opera, jazz and gypsy vocals, accordion and one little banjolele. Tackling everything from French hot jazz to wild Serbian and Transylvanian gypsy anthems, Flamenco, and oddball originals, the band is a not to be missed event for world music lovers.

The dynamic, virtuosic, fiery and peripatetic quartet take their roots both from their own varied musical and national backgrounds, as well as from their adventures and travels. The singer Ursula sang opera on the streets and town squares of Italy, until she found a love of gypsy music. The French violinist voyaged around all of Europe in a handmade mule-drawn caravan for ten years, collecting music and experiences. Their Serbian bass player has spent time playing with gypsies as well as some of rock and roll's legends, and aptly defends his reputation as the best slap bass player in the world. The Ensemble's guitarist is a master of Flamenco and gypsy jazz guitar who honed his craft in the gypsy caves of Granada, Spain.

IN OCTOBER!

GREAT LAKE SWIMMERS |
Tuesday, October 2nd, 2012
8:00 PM | $12 adv/$15 door

The Toronto-based indie band, Great Lake Swimmers, have been compared to The Cowboy Junkies and Iron and Wine for their atmospheric, minimalist early sound that has developed over time.

Paste magazine calls their new disc, New Wild Everywhere, "a treat of melodic proportions." The BBC calls is "gorgeous and rewarding." Released in April of 2012, New Wild Everywhere thematically picks up where the previous album left off, exploring transcendence in the natural world to describe the universal themes of love, mortality and escape.

Releasing five albums in just over a decade, the band has won a legion of followers throughout Canada and the States for their melodic indie rock powered by Dekker's ability to weave insightful lyrics into deceptively simple, hook-laden tunes.

The band has received public endorsements by the likes of Feist, Robert Plant, and cyclist Lance Armstrong. Josh Groban has been known to open his show with a Great Lake Swimmers cover, and the band has shared the stage with such varied artists as Calexico, Sarah Harmer, Bela Fleck & The Sparrow Quartet, Hayden, Sloan, Goldfrapp, and Bill Callahan of Smog.
