Trenton Takes Finale 7-1
Nuno Silences Sea Dogs with Seven Scoreless
TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Thunder (43-31) took advantage of two miscues and scored four unearned runs in the 7-1 win over the Portland Sea Dogs (31-44) Monday night at Waterfront Park. The win marks the 11th in 14 games against Portland this season.
Billed as a pitcher's duel, the first four innings of the game did not disappoint. Trenton lefty Vidal Nuno tossed the first four frames in scoreless fashion, as did Portland's southpaw Drake Britton.
Trenton entered the bottom of the fifth having notched just a single and a walk against Britton, but the offense came together for a run on two hits in the fifth. With one out, Jose Gil singled and the next hitter Addison Maruszak doubled him home to put Trenton up by one.
The Thunder offense would boom for five runs (four unearned) over the next two innings. The big blow came off the bat of Luke Murton in the form of a two-run blast to left center in the sixth that plated Zoilo Almonte with two down. Britton followed the home run up by walking the next three hitters before he departed.
Yadil Mujica greeted Jason Urquidez, Portland's newest pitcher, with a ground ball to shortstop, but Derrik Gibson threw the ball away and two runs came to score. Trenton plated two more runs one two separate sacrifice flies in the seventh to make it 7-0.
Portland's lone run came on a solo homerun to right off the bat of Bryce Brentz with two downs in the top of the ninth. In all, the Sea Dogs mustered just four hits against the combination of Nuno and Ricky Orta. Nick Natoli was the first to reach scoring position for the 'Dogs with a double in the eighth.
Britton completed five and two-thirds innings and allowed five runs, three earned, on five hits, four walks, and six strikeouts. On the other side it was Nuno that dealt seven scoreless. He allowed three baserunners on two hits and a walk, the southpaw added six K's.
