Governor LePage to Assess Flooding Damage in Brownville

Augusta, Maine - Governor Paul LePage will tour the town of Brownville in Piscataquis County on Tuesday, where severe flooding over the weekend washed out roads, and caused the death of a Milo man.

The Governor and senior administration officials will meet with the Brownville Town Manager and county emergency management personnel to view firsthand a number of the sites that received major damage from the heavy rain and flood water. The Town of Milo also suffered significant damage.

"Our goal is for these towns to get on their feet as soon as possible," the Governor said. "The sooner we know what it's going to take to do that, the sooner we can determine what options might exist to help."

Significant damage to roads and bridges was also reported in the town of Patten in Penobscot County, and Millinocket also has reported damages. County Emergency Management officials in both Penobscot and Piscataquis Counties are documenting damages in all the affected communities and unorganized territories. The entire region is also bracing for more heavy rain and possible flooding over the next few days.

Governor LePage also expressed concern about damage to the Maine, Montreal and Atlantic track, part of a rail line that is a major freight thoroughfare across the state. The Governor said that Maine Department of Transportation staff is working side by side with railroad crews to get the line open as soon as possible.

The State will need to document almost $1.8 million in infrastructure damages to be able to qualify for FEMA disaster assistance to reimburse affected towns.
