Dottie Hayes: Recent Works

Blue Hill, Maine - Brooklin artist Dottie Hayes will exhibit her artwork in a show, Recent Works, in the Blue Hill Public Library’s Britton Gallery during the month of July.  The show will consist of landscape, still life, abstract and figurative works from the last eight years, including watercolor, enamel, pastel, oil, and pen & ink. The public is invited to an opening reception on Friday July 6th at 4:30 PM.

Ms. Hayes was born in New York City and raised in Portland, Maine. She says, “Drawing, coloring, painting, designing were every day “things to do” as early as I can remember. My mother was an artist so I grew up surrounded by all the entrancing “tools” of creativity. And not being creative seemed like hunger or thirst unsatisfied.”

She has a BA in Art and Literature from Bennington College, Bennington, Vermont. She also studied drawing at the Portland School of Art, and was a student of John Folinsbee, New Hope, PA, and of Paul Feelee, Karl Knaths, Simon Moselsio and George Holt at Bennington College. She has also attended a number of workshops over the years at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts in Deer Isle.

Ms. Hayes taught at Landon School for Boys, Bethesda, MD;, St. Mary’s School for Girls, San Antonio, TX; Colegio Bolivar, Cali, Colombia; and has held private classes in her studio in North Brooklin. She has also participated in mentor programs and given presentations at local schools in Maine.

She raised 6 children while living abroad with her late husband Dr. Guy Scull Hayes, and now has 14 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. During those times when life was very full with children, moving to and  living in challenging places, I painted whenever I could - often engaging the children in projects at home and teaching art at their school .

Ms. Hayes has exhibited in Colombia, Nigeria, and Malawi, as well as New York City; and in Maine at Camden Public Library; Leighton Gallery, Blue Hill; Turtle Gallery, Deer Isle; Blue Hill Bay Gallery; and Ellsworth Grand Auditorium.
The show will be available for viewing during Library hours during the month of July.  For more information contact the Library at 374-5515.
