Belfast Physician's Medical License Reinstated

Augusta, Maine - Elizabeth McBride, M.D., accepted a restricted license from the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine in a Consent Agreement signed June 21, 2012. Dr. McBride's license had been summarily suspended on October 12, 2010 because of concerns that her prescribing practices and overall fitness to practice presented a danger to her patients. As a result of the June 21, 2012 Consent Agreement, Dr. McBride's license will be on probation for the next 5 years. Dr. McBride practiced in Belfast.

In signing this Consent Agreement, Dr. McBride admitted that, in the case of two patients, her limited medical records did not support the prescription of opiate/narcotic medications, that she violated the medical standard of care by prescribing narcotics at or following "curbside" consults, and that the volume and frequency of prescriptions should have raised significant concerns. Dr. McBride also underwent two psychiatric evaluations, which found no cognitive deficits, but found that she exhibited poor judgment and insight in the past.

As part of the agreement, Dr. McBride accepted a reprimand, a nineteen month suspension retroactive to October 2010, and a fine. In addition, Dr. McBride cannot prescribe any controlled medications for the treatment of chronic pain, must have a Board-approved physician monitor, and undergo substance monitoring and mental health treatment for the duration of the probation. Due to recent surgery on Dr. McBride's dominant wrist and hand, she must also restrict her practice to office-based, non-surgical medicine.
