African Bracelet Weaving & Community Weaving at the Blue Hill Public Library

Blue Hill, Maine - Brooksville resident Susan Merrill of the EarthLoom Project, will teach kids to weave African bracelets at the Blue Hill Public Library on Tuesday July 10th at 1:00 PM.  Participants will make their bracelets from twisted yarn, using books as looms.  Then using the skills they’ve developed they can help make a community weaving on an “EarthLoom” which be in the Library’s Larchwood Children’s Room the rest of the week. The bracelet class is for kids of any age, and anyone in the community is welcome to contribute to the weaving.

Susan Merrill is the founder of the EarthLoom Project, the mission of which is “to encourage the weaving of the fabric of community through bringing neighbors, neighborhoods and communities together in activities that will help transcend differences and forge bonds.”  According to Susan, “Earth Looms may be made with indigenous materials by the hands of those who will weave on them.” She goes on to say “Weaving together is so powerful-- it is a literal act of weaving together the community. In this simple and ancient art, we connect with others whose fingers have touched the same threads to create the same fabric with the same purpose.”

Materials will be provided for the EarthLoom weaving project but anyone is welcome to bring whatever they like to contribute to the weaving.  Even items such as sticks, stones, papers and other items can be woven in.

Thanks to the Friends of the Library, these events are free.  For more information, call Pat at 374-5515.
