Each class is a 3-hour combined lecture and laboratory, covering topics such as mineralogy, formation of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, geologic time, weathering and soil formation, glaciation, deserts and desertification, coastlines,
earthquakes and seismology, and evolution of mountain belts and platetectonics. Laboratory work includes the study of rocks, minerals, topographic maps and aerial photographs inpreparation for a one-day field trip to Acadia National Park.
ERS 101 is taught by retired East Carolina University Department of Geological Sciences professor David P. Lawrence. Professor Lawrence holds geology degrees from Beloit College, University of Washington, and BinghamtonUniversity. Professor Lawrence worked for several summers for mining and metals exploration companies, twoyears for an oil company, and taught geology and geophysics at the College ofCharleston and East Carolina University. In his research, Professor Lawrence has investigated metamorphic and plutonic rocks and structural geology in Guatemala, Costa Rica, Washington, Colorado, South Carolina, and North Carolina; and collected and analyzed gravity data in North and South Carolina.
