Camden, Maine - Terra Diddle Collective, the Camden Theater group that has brought all-ages performances of original works like “Awakening Mother Earth” and “Brave Little Parrot” to the midcoast community since 2009, stages a re-invented production of its 2011 work “The Earth Maiden” at the Camden Library’s amphitheater on Thursday, June 28 and Friday, June 29, 6 pm.
The group’s artistic director, Kathryn Oliver, notes, “This piece has been evolving for over a year, growing and changing with each performance and performer. New scenes were born and developed in workshop this spring; new characters, puppets and costumes created. It’s a work in progress. The amphitheater is the perfect venue to introduce the midcoast to the new version of “The Earth Maiden.” A circus scene adds to the visual and imaginative staging, with fire juggling and clowning. A special finale includes the entrance of the goddess puppet on a boat in the harbor.
Terra Diddle Collective’s process involves local children, led by professional actor, choreographer and musician Kristi Williamson, in an after-school workshop setting in the development of its original plays. Children learn dance, songs and dialogue as well as help create scenery and costuming. After several weeks of training, the children join the professional actors, dancers and musicians of the adult cast.
Appropriate for all ages, this stunning, inter-generational production tells the story of a mythical place where a young maiden cares for the land and its people. When her people forget how to honor and care for the land, it grows fallow and they grow hungry. Tying together universal themes of love, redemption and earth stewardship, the story is brought to life through dance, music, bigger-than-life-size puppetry, and the performances of over 40 cast members. Fantastical costumes by Robin Horty transform the players into fairies, clowns, lions, birds, and oceans.
Bring a blanket or lawn chair and a picnic to enjoy these evening performances, sponsored by Camden Real Estate and Waldo Arts Mission. Rain dates are Saturday, June 30, 10:30 am and Sunday, July 1, 1 pm. Tickets are available at the amphitheatre an hour before each show and are $8 children (under 12) $10 adults.
