RYAN KALISH CONTINUES MLB REHAB ASSIGNMENT



New faces added to the roster - Spoone and Britton join staff


Altoona, Pa. -  The Portland Sea Dogs resume their six-game roadtrip on Saturday night in Altoona, Pennsylvania, battling the Curve in a doubleheader beginning at 6:00 PM.  Red Sox outfielder Ryan Kalish continues his Major League Rehab Assignment with Portland.  Kalish went 1-for-4 with a double and a walk on Thursday morning in Harrisburg.  After Thursday's game, the Sea Dogs added right-hander Chorye (Core-ee) Spoone from Triple-A Pawtucket and received left-hander Drake Britton from High-A Salem on Friday.

Kalish became the 21st player in franchise history to make a Major League rehab assignment and the second this season.  Righty Daisuke Matsuzaka made a rehab start (no-decision) on April 28th against the Reading Phillies at Hadlock Field, working four and 2/3 innings on three hits, one run, two walks and seven strikeouts.

Kalish made his Major League debut with the Red Sox in 2010, hitting .252 (41-for-163) with 4 homers and 24 RBI in 53 games.  Kalish, Will Middlebrooks and Daniel Nava all hit grand-slams for their first Fenway Park home runs.  The New Jersey native hit .277 (150-for-541) in 144 games with Portland (2009-10), 21 homers and 85 RBI.

Major League Rehabs with Portland...As a Red Sox affiliate: Kalish and Matsuzaka (2012), Bobby Jenks (2011), Mike Cameron, Manny Delcarmen, Jacoby Ellsbury and Jeremy Hermida (2010), Jed Lowrie, Matsuzaka and John Smoltz (2009), David Ortiz (2008), Lenny DiNardo (2004 & 2006), Casey Fossum (2003), Chad Fox (2003), Wade Miller (2005) and Matt White (2003).  As a Florida Marlins affiliate: Luis Aquino (1994), Chris Hammond (1994), Charles Johnson (1995), Matt Mantei (1997), Kevin Millar (2002) and Gary Sheffield (1994).

Spoone is in his 8th pro season, his 1st year with the Red Sox organization after signing as a minor league free agent on November 21, 2011.  The righty went 1-1, 2.79 ERA (6 ER/19.1 IP) in 14 games with the PawSox this season. Last year, he went 7-6 with 1 save and a 4.50 ERA in 31 games (19 starts) between Triple-A Norfolk and Double-A Bowie.  Originally and 8th round pick by Baltimore in 2005 draft, Spoone attended the Community College of Baltimore County, Catonsville Campus (Catonsville, MD).  Eastern League totals with Bowie (2008, 10-11): 15-14, 4.14 ERA (120 ER/261 IP), 255 H, 140 R, 21 HR, 147 BB, 184 SO.

Britton is a member of Boston's 40-man roster (added November 18, 2011), and went 3-5, 5.80 ERA (29 ER/45 IP) with High-A Salem (Carolina League) in 10 games/8 starts.  The lefty finished May 2-2, 2.10 ERA (10 ER/25.2 IP) in five starts, recording 29 strikeouts.  Britton was selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 23rd round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft out of Tomball (Texas) High School.  He is ranked as the Boston's number 16 prospect by Baseball America
