Rockport Public Library’s 2012 Summer Reading Program

Rockport, Maine - Rockport Public Library is pleased to announce our upcoming summer reading program. The events will be held every Tuesday afternoon from 3:30 – 4:30 PM in the Rockport Opera House Downstairs Room beginning on June 26. The programs are all free and open to children ages 4-12.

The kick-off event for summer reading is a visit from Northern Stars Traveling Inflatable Planetarium. This amazing star theatre will take children on a journey through the solar system. Kids will enter a 30 by 30 foot planetarium and watch a program called The Wonderful Sky, which takes a look at the seasonal night sky as seen with the unaided eye. Stars, constellations, visible planets, meteors, the Moon, and northern lights are all likely to be discussed. This presentation will be held upstairs at the Rockport Opera House.

The following week on July 3, Chewonki will bring the Batmobile: Bats of the World. On July 10, Lindsay Pinchbeck from Sweet Tree Arts will present an Indonesian shadow puppet show and help children make their own shadow puppets. On July 17, local storyteller, Jan Zimmermann will share Native American legends from Maine’s own Wabenaki tribe. Children will make their very own dream catchers. On July 24, artist Marcie Jan Bronstein will lead a mixed media art workshop for kids to access their wildest dreams. On July 31, join us for our annual harbor cruise at the Rockport Harbor. Kids will make wish boats to set sail, and author Fran Hodgkins will be on hand to read from her book Andre, the Famous Harbor Seal. This program requires additional registration for the boat trip.

Summer Reading is made possible through a generous gift from the MLDC Charitable Fund.
