ROCKPORT, Maine – In April, MaineHealth Pen Bay Hospital’s Family Birth Center welcomed two new original art pieces by an artist with a personal connection to the hospital.

ROCKPORT, Maine - The Rockport Public Library announces a new horticulture series in partnership with Merryspring Nature Center. In monthly talks from March through May, Merryspring Nature Center Program Director John Fromer (and Maine Master Gardener Volunteer) will offer free gardening classes at the Rockport Library covering a variety of topics and culminating in a special tour on Merryspring’s flower gardens in mid-June.

Copper Animal Sculptures at Rockport Library

Rockport, Maine - Rockport resident G. Bion Richards will be exhibiting his copper sculptures of birds and salt water fish in the Marine Room of the Rockport Public Library during the months of March and April. All the copper work is made by hand with an anvil and a ball peen hammer, lots of pounding, and lots of heat. Richards says, "Winter is my favorite time for my work with crisp Maine air and a snowbank to cool the red hot copper.” Richards explains that the pieces were inspired by working on farms, attending the Windsor Fair, and observing Great Blue Heron and schools of ocean fish.

Starts at the Rockport Opera House

Rockport, Maine - All funds raised from this event go to support the construction of the new Rockport Public Library. More than just a building that holds books, the new Rockport Public Library will be the community’s gathering and learning center. It will offer access to technology, digital resources, and meeting spaces, as well as print and electronic books. We anticipate opening the doors of our new home to the community in the late summer of 2020.

Our 5k (3.1 mile) Run/Walk starts in beautiful Rockport village and travels along the coast offering fantastic ocean views. The race starts at the Rockport Opera House, takes you down Beauchamp Point, and ends at Rockport Harbor Marine Park, where water and snacks will be provided. The harbor is a short walk from the start of the race. This event is open to runners and walkers of all ages and skills. Strollers are allowed, but be mindful of traffic as most of the race does not have a sidewalk.

Race day registration starts at 8:00am at the Rockport Opera House, and the race starts at 9:00am. If you have registered in advance, please allow yourself enough time to sign in and to get your bib number.

The 5K race is open to all, and registration costs $25 on race day or $20 in advance. You can sign up in advance at the library or online at https://runsignup.com/Race/ME/Rockport/RockportPublicLibraryRunWalk5k. Advance registration ends on Friday, June 21st.

CHRHS In the Heights Cast and Crew help Hispanic Federation’s Hurricane Relief

On November 17th, a check for $1500 was mailed to the NYC – based Hispanic Federation, designating the funds for “Unidos Disaster Relief & Recovery.”

A letter from CHRHS director, Kim Murphy, accompanied the check:

To Whom It May Concern:

Enclosed, please find our check to the Hispanic Federation for $1500, for Unidos Hurricane Relief. I would like to tell you a little bit about how we raised this money.

We recently produced Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical: In the Heights. While we were rehearsing musical numbers and scenes from the show, portraying characters from the immigrant community of Washington Heights, Hurricane Maria hit Puerto Rico. While we were singing “Blackout,” we were reading headlines about a devastating blackout. As we were singing, “we are powerless,” we were also reading headlines of Puerto Ricans feeling “powerless” – not only in reality, but also within their rights as American Citizens. And as we sang Miranda’s music, we again read how music can be used as a powerful tool – through the production of Lin-Manuel’s new song titled “Almost Like Praying” – with many Latino musicians coming together to perform and raise funds for Puerto Rico Hurricane Relief.

And so we felt it fitting and timely that we should do our part. Taking a cue from one of themes within the musical, where a central character wins money through a lottery, we also ran a “lottery” (50/50 raffle) during Intermission. Many people were motivated to give to this cause. Being powerless took on an additional meaning, as we Mainers lost power in a windstorm just three days before our show was scheduled to open. Many were without power for six days; luckily the school got power back quickly and we were able to open In the Heights on time. However, we reminded the audience – “Do you remember how you felt? Do you remember how you complained when you didn’t have power for six days? Well, if you lived in Puerto Rico, you would now be on day 52 without power. We have the privilege to perform Lin-Manuel Miranda’s characters on stage tonight. Let’s join with him in helping to raise money for hurricane relief, and show the world that we are not powerless.”

Maine Lobster Festival's 2017 Maine Sea Goddess Coronation Judges Banquet

Rockport, Maine - This is it the last chance for the 2017 Sea Princesses to impress the judges.  The girls arrive at the Samoset Resort in Rockport by four in the afternoon.  The banquet does not start till six, but there is so much to accomplish before the guests and judges start arriving.  Last minute quizzing for the judges question and answer session, individual photo sessions as well as group photos with photographer David Mills.  By the time the photos ate finished the families and guests have started arriving.

Sharon lombardo the Maine Sea Goddess director has some opening remarks and thank yous to all those who make this amazing evening possible followed by a delicious banquet provided by the Samoset Resort.

Once everyone is pleasantly full it is time to get down to the business of the evening, the question and answer session with the judges.  Each girl will have a three minute session to answer the varied questions from the judges.

After the banquet the judges will have only a short time to turn in their scores for each of the girls and on Wednesday the next Maine Sea Goddess will be crowned at the Maine Lobster Festival's Maine Sea Goddess Coronation.

Rockport, Maine - Round up your friends and family for a fun evening to benefit Trekkers adventure-based, youth-mentoring program at Flatbread Pizza, 339 Commercial Street (Route 1) Rockport, on Tuesday, June 13 from 5:00 to 9:00 pm. Our friends at Flatbread will donate $3.50 for every large pizza purchased, and $1.75 for each small pizza sold, to Trekkers.

Reservations are not needed for the event, so you can arrive at any time. The restaurant features scrumptious pizza made from local and organic ingredients in a traditional, wood-fired oven. Call ahead at 706-4146 for take-out.

Founded in 1994, Trekkers is a non-profit, outdoor-based youth mentoring organization that serves seventh through twelfth-grade students from six communities in midcoast Maine. Trekkers combines expeditionary learning, community service, and adventure-based education utilizing a long-term mentoring approach to help students build life skills. Through grade-specific programs that build on the skills, learning and personal growth gained the previous year, Trekkers incorporates five educational components: adventure-based learning, cultural awareness, community service, environmental stewardship and wilderness exploration.  Trekkers seeks to expose students to the diversity of people, cultures, natural resources and opportunities that exist outside the focus of their everyday life and to prepare them for life beyond high school.

For 23 years, Trekkers has been a positive force in changing the lives of over 700 young people from the RSU13 school district plus St. George. Through their six-year relationship-building programs, Trekkers program staff and volunteers connects local students with caring adults, and helps them gain valuable life skills. This process is done through expeditionary learning, community service and adventure-based education. With community adult volunteers working throughout the year, Trekkers provides myriad of educational, experiential, and cross-cultural opportunities for young people, with an emphasis on relationship building using the wilderness as a classroom. Trekkers follows students as they "graduate" from one program into the next along a six-year journey that starts when they are in 7th grade and continues until they graduate from high school.

In June 2016, Trekkers successfully completed its six-year expansion, doubling their capacity to now serve up to 240 students from St. George, Cushing, Owls Head, Rockland, Thomaston and South Thomaston.
