The workshop is one of the kick-off events for the museum's 2012 theme, "Summer Folk: The Tourists of Penobscot Bay." According to museum educator Susan Henkel, it was common for tourists in the late 19th and early 20th centuries to keep personal journals in which they wrote and sketched the highlights of their Maine vacations
Abbie Read is an artist member of Aarhus Gallery and a board member of Waterfall Arts, both in Belfast. She has been involved with all aspects of book arts for many years and often incorporates books made from found and recycled materials into her sculptural work.
The workshop runs from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes lunch catered by The Good Kettle. All materials will be provided, but participants are encouraged to bring any special papers they wish to work with. Pre-registration is required, at a cost of $50 ($45 for museum members). To register, contact Susan Henkel at 207-548-2529 ext.202 or shenkel@pmm-maine.org.
In addition to the journal workshop, Penobscot Marine Museum is also offering free tours on April 28. The Seabag Visible Storage Center, housing a diverse collection of local and marine art and artifacts, will be open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. At 2 p.m., visitors can take guided tour of the historic 1825 Merithew House, with its exhibits of marine art, ship models and regional history.
Maine's first maritime museum, Penobscot Marine Museum is home to outstanding collections of marine art and artifacts, small craft, and historic photography. More information is at www.PenobscotMarineMuseum.org or call 207-548-2529.
