Editor: David Mills
PORTLAND, ME - The New Britain Rock Cats (13-6) plated five in the seventh and notched another in the ninth to walk-off 7-6 over the Portland Sea Dogs (5-15) Tuesday night at New Britain Stadium.
The Rock Cats trailed 6-1 heading into the seventh inning and took advantage of the Portland bullpen after starter Billy Buckner left the game. With two outs in the frame, Jeremy Kehrt allowed a walk and two singles to the bottom three hitters of the New Britain lineup. Aaron Hicks plated a run on a single, Chris Herrmann walked and picked up an RBI, and Evan Bigley pulled the 'Cats within one on an RBI single.
Chris Colabello completed the comeback with a two RBI single up the middle and ended Kehrt's night on the mound. Will Latimer came on in relief and allowed the leadoff man to reach in the ninth before being lifted for Josh Fields. Fields allowed a double to Nathan Hanson that plated the game-winning run for New Britain. The loss was charged to Latimer (1-2).
Buckner spun a beauty and put the Sea Dogs in a position to pick up their second win in a row. The righty allowed a homerun in the first inning to Herrmann, but rebounded to finish six innings of three-hit baseball, walked one, and struck out 11 New Britain hitters.
The offense for Portland continued to click early in the game and scored all six runs in the first three innings. Jeremy Hazelbaker scored the first run on a Kolbirn Vitek double play in the first inning. Oscar Tejeda put the 'Dogs up 2-0 with an RBI double that plated Reynaldo Rodriguez. In the second, Ronald Bermudez hit a solo homerun to left, and Tejeda followed suit in the third with a two run homer in the third. Hazelbaker capped off the scoring for Portland with an RBI single in the third that put Sea Dogs up 6-1.
Logan Darnell began the game on the mound for New Britain, but suffered his second poor start in a row. Darnell couldn't make it past the third and allowed all six runs on eight hits, he walked four and did not strike out a batter. The bullpen behing the lefty was near-perfect. Two hits over the next six frames was all the Sea Dogs bats could muster against a trio of the Rock Cats' arms. Deolis Guerra (2-0) pitched the final two innings and earned the win in relief.
Hazelbaker extended his hit streak to eight games with a hit in the first inning. Rodriguez extended his streak of games in which he has reached base safely to 13 with a single in the first as well.
