Portland completes its first series win of the season

Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs (6-15) trailed in the ninth, but notched five runs in the final frame and closed out the 7-3 win over the New Britain Rock Cats (13-7) Wednesday afternoon at New Britain Stadium.

With one down in the ninth, Bryce Brentz doubled off of New Britain reliever Danny Turpen. Jeremy Hazelbaker pinch ran for the right fielder and scored the tying run on Dan Butler's single. Heiker Meneses followed with a sinking liner, off Turpen (2-1) that hit the second base bag and scored Ronald Bermudez for Portland's go ahead run. The 'Dogs scored two more on Juan Carlos Linares' single and their final run on an error by the New Britain shortstop. In total, New Britain made five errors, but allowed just one unearned run to score.

Luke French took the hill for the Rock Cats and was helped out of the first by a double play turned behind him. French gave up a one out double to Reynaldo Rodriguez, and then tossed a wild pitch that bounced wildly and allowed Rodriguez to score from second. In the fifth, Dan Butler doubled and scored on a Derrik Gibson single for Portland's second run.

Portland starter Chris Balcom-Miller struggled out of the gate for the third start in a row. The righty allowed two runs in the first inning on three hits. Estarlin De Los Santos scored on a wild pitch and Chris Colabello picked up an RBI in the first off of Balcom-Miller. The Rock Cats plated another run in the second after Nathan Hanson walked to leadoff the frame and scored on an Estarlin De Los Santos ground out to second. Balcom-Miller retired the side in the home half of the fifth to finish his outing.

Eammon Portice backed up the starter with two innings of scoreless relief and Charlie Rosario (2-0) earned his second win of the season with a scoreless eighth and ninth inning. In the win, Rodriguez extended his streak to 14 games in which he has safely reached base with his double in the fourth.
