CASTINE, Maine – Maine Maritime Academy men's lacrosse fell to the
University of Southern Maine on Saturday afternoon, 14-6 in
non-conference action on Ritchie Field.
The Huskies struck first on an unassisted goal from Jaymz McStowe at 13:48, but minutes later Alex Grant-Roy
(Biddeford, Maine) put the Mariners on the board to tie things up. The
two teams exchanged goals, with Seth Wing picking up a score for USM and
Tim Grant (East Northport, N.Y.) adding a goal for the Mariners to make it 2-2 at 8:41 in the first quarter. Alec Grant (Hollis, N.H.) found Dean Samuelson
(Ellsworth, Maine) for a man-up goal at 2:46 to give the Mariners their
only lead of the game, but Keegan Smith scored a goal to send the teams
into the second quarter notched at 3-3.
Southern Maine added three goals in the second quarter, while holding
the Mariners scoreless to take a 6-3 lead into halftime, and added four
goals in each of the final two quarters to take the 14-6 victory.
Samuelson led the Mariners with two goals and two assists on 10
shots, while also scooping up four ground balls and causing a turnover. Michael Martel
(Biddeford, Maine) added two goals, an assist and a ground ball, while
Grant-Roy scooped up six ground balls, caused a team-high four turnovers
and a goal, and Tim Grant added a goal, went 8-of-20 on the faceoff and
scooped up nine ground balls.
Nate Delgiudice, Jeff Urmston and Paul Lenardo added three goals each
for the Huskies, while Wing grabbed two goals, and Smith, McStowe, and
Austin Watts each added a goal. Josh Murphy went 13-of-22 from the
faceoff and scooped up a team-high seven grounds balls and Eddie
Barrasso led USM with four caused turnovers.
Cody Schell (Pasadena, Md.) stopped 13 shots in net for the Mariners, while John Bossi stopped 11 shots in net for the Huskies.
The Mariners fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Huskies improve to
1-0. Maine Maritime Academy will return to action on March 12 and 13
when they travel to Massachusetts Maritime for the Third Annual Maritime
Classic.
