Famed Historian and Sea Captain, Jim Sharp, Joins
Boothbay Harbor’s 50th Annual Windjammer Days!
Boothbay Harbor,
Maine-- (April 3, 2012) Historian and Sea Captain, Jim Sharp has been added
to the list of events taking place during the Boothbay Harbor Region Chamber’s
50th Annual Windjammer Days Festival bringing an even greater reference
for attendees to understand the beauty and significance of the historic tall
ships.
Jim will be present at the Boothbay Region Historical
Society from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday June 26th 2012 to give an
informative and entertaining talk about Maritime History.
Realizing early on that a suit and tie were not his calling,
Jim found a passion for sailing and decided to dedicate his life and career to
it. His first purchase was a 44’ Alden classic yawl that he took over and set
out for the Bahamas to become a charter captain.
After Jim’s stint in the Bahamas, he came to Camden, Maine
to discover the Windjammer fleet. His first was the Schooner Stephen Taber, the
oldest commercial sailing vessel in the U.S. He later purchased the schooner
Adventure and pursued a rebuilding while working on the Arctic Schooner
Bowdoin.
Jim developed a passion for rebuilding boats and went on to
work on over 30 vessels, sailboats, tugboats, freight boats and even a Dutch
built canal boat on which he and his wife Meg sailed throughout Europe.
Jim is also the author of his memoirs, “With Reckless
Abandon.” He later donated is schooner Adventure to a preservation in
Gloucester and purchased the old Outward Bound Property in Rockland to open the
Sail, Power and Steam Museum, Children’s Museum, professional office building,
marina and boat shop.
