Talk on Amazon Pueblo Project June 29

"A Family in the Village for La Libertad
in the Colombian Amazon"

Thomaston, Maine - On Friday, June 29th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Thomaston Public Library, Thomaston born and raised, Ben Angulo, will discuss Amazon Pueblo, a project started at the University of Maine, and plans to help the people of La Libertad. Angulo's interactive slide talk will focus on what may be needed to enhance La Libertad villagers' quality of life by following sustainable practices with food, water, energy and economics. Admission is free.

La Libertad is an indigenous village in the Colombian Amazon, near the borders of Peru and Brazil. In 14 years the village's population has grown from 50 to over 350 people. They village is very poor and is plagued by parasite-infested water, lack of sanitation, and the lure of drug money across the border in Peru.

After graduating from Georges Valley High School in the 1980s, Angulo has worked as a science teacher at Rockland District Middle School and as an environmental education instructor at Tanglewood 4-H Camp and Learning Center, Angulo taught science for seven years at Colegio Los Nogales, in Bogotá, Colombia. During that time he traveled extensively, studying the geology and ecosystem of the country. He has been a licensed Maine guide for 17 years and has wilderness EMT certification. He is currently a special education teacher at Camden Hills Regional High School.
