Kittery, ME - On Saturday, June 30 at 8pm world renowned artists body musician Keith Terry; contemporary dancer and choreographer David Parker and The Bang Group; and tap dancer Josh Hilberman will take the stage at The Dance Hall in Kittery for a revelry of rhythm. "Rhythmining" will be the culmination of this years Portsmouth Percussive Dance Festival in Kittery, a four day festival of workshops, jam and performance. Bay Area artist Terry will feature work from his International Body Music Festival which will tour New England in 2013.
Keith Terry is a percussionist/rhythm dancer whose work encompasses a number of allied performance disciplines — music, dance, theater, performance art — which he brings together to create an artistic vision that defies easy categorization. As a self-defined "body musician," Terry uses the oldest musical instrument in the world — the human body (his own) — as the basis for exploring, blending and bending traditional and contemporary rhythmic, percussive and movement possibilities. Keith is a 2008 Guggenheim Fellow.
David Parker began his career as a teenager tap dancing on the sidewalks of Boston. While attending Bard College, he was introduced to modern, post-modern and classical forms and began putting them all together. He has pursued an unusually diverse performance career which includes "downtown" dance, traditional modern, classical character roles, rhythm tap, experimental tap and singing and acting. At the heart of his work is a love of rhythmic form and the humor that flows from it. He has performed and choreographed internationally and his work has been commended by the New York Dance and Performance ("Bessie") Awards committee.
Josh Hilberman tap dancer, performs, choreographs, and teaches internationally. Groomed by vaudevillians and old-time entertainers, and with an ongoing mentorship with tap pioneer Brenda Bufalino, Josh has performed all over the US and Europe, and been a featured faculty member at more than 75 tap dance festivals. Recognized with a lifetime achievement award by the Barcelona Tap Association, a Dance USA/National Endowment for the Arts grant for choreography, and the 2009 Presidential Scholars Teachers Recognition award, Hilberman's travels in tap have entered a third decade.
About the PPDF: Known for its intimate environment, spectacular surroundings, and great artists/faculty, the PPDF (Portsmouth Percussive Dance Festival) is an internationally recognized dance festival, attracting students, audiences and artists from around the country and the world. PPDF traditionally held the last week in June, was founded in 1995 by Drika Overton as an extension of her career as a tap dancer and producer in the neighboring waterfront communities of Kittery, Maine and Portsmouth, NH. The Seacoast home became a favorite for its venues, history, culture, and environment. From the beginning the festival incorporated various percussive forms of expression, including Irish step dance, flamenco, and body music and evolved to include not only core classes in tap and jazz dance, but also week-long intensives in African dance and drumming, vocals, and a variety of traditional and contemporary dance and music arts. The festival is filled with intensive study and a variety of events including jam sessions, performances, films, and discussions. The relationships fostered among the festival artists gave creative birth in the year 2000 to Clara's Dream: a jazz nutcracker and Music Hall Follies A Vaudeville in 9 Acts, which premiered during our PPDF Vaudeville celebration in 2003 and featured Broadway artist Bill Irwin and the legendary Fayard Nicholas. In 2008, the company created the acclaimed Off the Beaten Path: A Jazz & Tap Odyssey, commissioned by New England Presenters with support from the New England Foundation for the Arts, which toured the Northeast in 2008-2009.
