Rocky Coast News reaches a quarter
of a million readers in the last six months.
September 12th marked
six months since Rocky Coast News went on line. The growth has been
far faster than we had expected and are pleased to announce that RCN
has served more than a quarter million readers over the last six
months.
The story of Rocky Coast News reads like a novel. Born out of a community need when the local papers shut down unexpectedly. RCN soon found itself serving the needs of the entire state of Maine with “Positively good news”. In only it's first six months Rocky Coast News serves over 32,000 readers per month. It seems that people are hungry for good positive news in this increasingly negative world.
Doug Mills, publisher of RCN, was born into a middle class Maine family and spent 25 years taking care of his wife through cancer and it's complications. With his resources completely used up Doug decided to fulfill his lifelong dream of becoming a professional artist. At 55 years old he made the decision to become a professional photographer! “I had nothing left to loose.” Over the next five years he became well known as a Tall Ship Photographer. When the recession hit people stopped purchasing expensive prints. Again, with nothing left he authored and published his first book “1871”. Doug has now authored two books of Tall Ship Photographs with Nautical Verse and numerous photography books. In March of 2012 he partnered with his son David to create the news magazine Rocky Coast News.
David Mills, founder and owner of RCN, was born with speech problems and did not speak hardly at all till he was five. He spent 11 of his 12 school years in special ed. His senior year he was reluctantly allowed to take main stream classes at the insistence of his father, however the Special Ed Director was not pleased with the prospect and told his father that “When he fails it was on you for taking him out of Special Ed.” Needless to say David graduated with nearly all As and Bs. After graduation he struggled with an illness that kept him home bound for weeks at a time. In an effort to help his Dad got him started as a photographer and he became interested in journalism. Now he is the owner of one of the fastest growing online news magazines in the state.
Rocky Coast News will launch it's New Hampshire and Vermont site on October 1st , www.rockycoastnewsnhvt.com, and plans to be New England wide by the end of 2013 with five regional sites to create the RCN America Network.
