Maine's Common Loons‏

Maine's Common Loons‏

Rockport, Maine - Maine Audubon wildlife biologist Susan Gallo will lead a presentation on “The State of Maine’s Common Loons” at Merryspring Nature Center in Camden on Tuesday, May 29 at 12:00 noon.

The Common Loon is one of the most recognized and revered birds in Maine. Susan Gallo will guide the audience through a year in the life of these captivating waterfowl- from their cold, coastal winters on the ocean to their springtime arrival to our lakes and rivers.  Coupled with beautiful pictures from Maine Audubon’s Loon Photo Contest, Gallo will discuss the migration patterns, behaviors, and habits of these birds throughout the seasons. She will also translate a bit of “loon language” and interpret a variety of loon calls.  Attendees will also find out what they can do to protect Maine’s loons and help them thrive on our waterways.

As Director of the Maine Audubon Society’s Maine Loon Project, Gallo oversees activities that include annual state-wide loon counting programs, loon habitat assessment, and outreach and educational programs. Before arriving in Maine, she served as a certified Stewardship Advisor for the State of Montana where she monitored avian populations and nesting success for private firms and the state of Montana. While in Montana, Gallo also worked as a natural resources consultant for several non-profit organizations. Susan is the recipient of a 2011 TogetherGreen Fellowship, sponsored by National Audubon and Toyota. Her education includes a B.S. in Natural Resources from Cornell University and an M.S. in Organismal Biology and Ecology from the University of Montana.

This presentation is part of the Spring Talk Series at Merryspring, which is being sponsored by The First (www.the1st.com).

Admission to the Tuesday Talks is free to Merryspring members and children, with a nominal $5 fee for non-members.
