Rockport, Maine- On June 25, schooner captains and identical twins Bob and Joe Tassi will set sail from Rockport aboard the schooner Timberwind bound for Boothbay Harbor. At the same time, veteran marathoner Dr. Aquilino Alamo will start running from Rockport to Boothbay bearing the Windjammer Days signature torch. Alamo calls himself “a regular family doctor” and has a dream of running a marathon in each of the 50 states.
In an effort to bring attention to childhood obesity, Alamo will run the 40+ miles down the coast to be joined by his wife, child and family dog for the last half mile. They’ll meet with the Tassi brothers to pass the torch at the Whale Park in Boothbay Harbor marking the official start of Windjammer Days.Says Captain Bob Tassi of the Timberwind, “Everyone’s fired up and this is a great way for people to support good health and celebrate Maine’s windjamming tradition.”
Captain Bob is offering up to 24 passengers the opportunity to participate in the day-long “Jammers” portion of the race from Rockport to Boothbay. For $125, guests can enjoy a day of great sailing, home-cooked meals and the fanfare when they meet up with the “Joggers.” To make it even more fun, one of the event sponsors – WHOM radio - is holding a contest for six lucky passengers to win a free spot aboard the Timberwind. No purchase is necessary to enter the contest, simply go to the WHOM website to sign up.
To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Boothbay’s Windjammer Days, the US Postal Service has created a pictorial postmark they’ll offer on June 27 during the Windjammer Days festival at the Whale Park and post office in downtown Boothbay. For collectors, the Boothbay Chamber will have stamped postcards available for purchase.
For 2012, the Boothbay’s Windjammer Days includes a golf tournament, a unique antique boat parade, a lively street parade with the theme of "Welcome Aboard," incredible fireworks over the harbor on Wednesday evening, creative kids programs and games, free concerts, and an artist's alley and craft show.
