Rockport, Maine - The Midcoast's own Women's Flat Track Roller Derby league, the Rock Coast Rollers, are gearing up to host their second intra-league home bout at the Midcoast Recreation Center on Route 90 in Rockport. The event takes place this Saturday July 21st at 6p.m. with doors opening at 5 p.m. The bout will be called the Edna St. Vincent Melee in a play on words honoring the area's well known female poet and the 100th anniversary of her famous poem "Renascence".
The Rollers will once again go head to head with their own in a Black vs. White match up pitting the Beat Poets against the Horror Novelists. Zoë Foster a.k.a. Roll Doll of the Rollers said, "We can't think of a more appropriate derby idol. Edna St. Vincent Millay was a strong, independent woman well before it was culturally accepted. I'm pretty sure if she were alive today, she'd be playing Woman's Flat Track Roller Derby. The fact that she's from the Midcoast just makes it even more perfect." The bout will feature half-time shows from the Rock Coast Rollers Jeerleaders and Djump! a local West African drum and dance group based in Camden.
The Rock Coast Rollers league formed in early 2011 and is a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association. With leagues across North America, roller derby is on the rise. The Rock Coast Rollers are just back from two travel bouts in New Brunswick, Canada and plan to compete in a regional tournament in Massachusetts this August.
Tickets for the bout (handmade by Yellowbird & Co.) are only $5 and can be purchased at Rock City Coffee, Atlantic Baking Co. and Good Tern Food Coop, and from the league's website at rockcoastrollers.weebly.com. A portion of the proceeds from the bout will benefit Go! Malawi, an organization dedicated to reducing poverty and providing opportunity in the African nation of Malawi. The event is handicapped accessible and family friendly with free admission for children under 12.
