Fluctuations in rainfall amounts, longer growing seasons, and mild winters are a few evident effects of a shifting climate in Maine. Stancioff’s talk will outline current research efforts on how the climate is changing, including issues that may affect Maine directly, and some of the efforts being done to adapt to these changes. A major focus of her presentation will be coastal and marine areas of concern, and will include “Signs of the Seasons: A Maine Phenology Program” as an example of citizen science. Phenology is the study of periodic plant and animal life cycle events and how these are influenced by seasonal and interannual variations in climate.
Esperanza is an Associate Extension Professor with University of Maine and Sea Grant. Her current work focuses on climate change education, research and adaptation planning. Since 1988, she has designed and implemented educational programs in coastal and watershed ecosystem health, monitoring, assessment, and management. She is the recipient of a Gulf of Maine Visionary Award and a Maryann Hartman Award for her contributions to statewide environmental stewardship and marine education. Prior to arriving in Maine, she worked on a variety of research projects in Washington state and West Africa. Esperanza holds a BS in Marine Biology from Evergreen College and an MS in Environmental Education from the University of Maine.
