Town of Camden Tree Program Deadline April 13th
Editor: David Mills
Camden, ME - This year you can take part in the Town of Camden’s Shade Tree Program at a far greater savings than ever before. The cost to participants will be just $48, a mere 15% of the total cost of $320 for each tree. Any resident or business within Camden can order one or two trees at a substantial discount. There are seven varieties offered this year: Red Maple, Sugar Maple, two varieties of Crabapple (Adams and Donald Wyman), Japanese Tree Lilac, Callery Pear and Red Oak.
This offer is being made possible by a Project Canopy Grant that Camden has been awarded from the Maine Forest Service and USDA Forest Service community forestry program. The Town of Camden, the Camden Garden Club and the grant will pay the majority of the cost of each tree.
The trees will be professionally planted by Hoboken Gardens and are guaranteed for one year. A sign up sheet is available at the Town Office; the deadline for ordering is April 13th. Trees must be planted on the street side of homes or businesses. This offer is limited to the first 20 trees ordered.
This program began in the 1970’s after most of Camden’s majestic elm trees died from Dutch Elm disease. A tremendous effort was made to save the trees, but all to no avail. Camden’s residents worked tirelessly to ensure that the town would recover from this loss. From 1974 to 1979, 176 trees were planted around town and many hundreds more have been planted in conjunction with the Town of Camden Shade Tree Program, including those in front of the Congregational Church, Intricon-Tibbetts Industries, The Whitehall Inn and the former tannery on Washington Street. Ten additional trees were planted in 2011.
